TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS 
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY
 
1962 - Reflecting President John F. Kennedy's emphasis on unconventional warfare and counterinsurgency operations, the Navy created two Sea Air Land (SEAL) teams. The SEALs were successors to the Underwater Demolition Teams formed during World War II.

2002 - CAPT Matthew Bancroft '94, USMC was lost when the KC-130 tanker he was aboard crashed during landing approach at an airfield in southwestern Pakistan. Six others aboard were also killed. He was a member of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 352.

A Commander-in-Chief's final journey led by military tradition
President Jimmy Carter, the nation's 39th chief executive and the first U.S. Naval Academy graduate to serve in the Oval Office, began his final journey Saturday with a procession that intertwined the small-town rhythms of Plains, Georgia, and the weighty traditions of American military pageantry. His was a life well lived, one whose actions epitomized the motto of his alma mater, the U.S. Naval Academy: non sibi sed patriae — "not for self, but for country."

President James E. Carter, Jr. was awarded the Distinguished Submarine Award Nov 14, 2024 by the Naval Submarine League. Read Jason Carter's speech on behalf of his grandfather in this latest issue of The Submarine Review. The award citation and speech are noted on pages 85-93 of the issue.

 The Naval Submarine League was founded and incorporated in Virginia as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1982. Its purpose is charitable, educational, and scientific in support of the Submarine Force. It has both individual and corporate members, and individual membership is open to any U.S. citizen. Currently, there are over 4,000 members in 10 chapters and more than 180 corporate members. The current Executive Director is LCDR Steve Fischer, USN (Ret), Class of 1983.

Navy Crew 2025 Pull for Navy Banquet
We are pleased to announce Dave Frost will receive our 2025 Craig Thrasher Service to Rowing Award. We are also excited to share that LtGen Roberta Shea, USMC, will be our keynote speaker at the banquet. After Dave Frost '75 graduated as the heavyweight rowing team captain from the Naval Academy and then retiring as a US Navy Captain from the Surface Warfare community, he settled in San Diego where he became a pillar of the local rowing community. Lieutenant General Bobbi Shea '91 enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1985 before attending the U.S. Naval Academy and commissioning as a Marine Corps communications officer. Lieutenant General Shea assumed her current duties as the Commander, United States Marine Corps Forces Command; Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Atlantic; and Commander, Marine Corps Forces North in August 2024. As a Navy Women's Crew varsity letterwinner and long-time supporter of Hubbard Hall, we are excited to have her back as our guest speaker at the Pull for Navy Banquet.
