Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1968 - 2LT Henry Wright '67, USMC was killed in action by small arms fire from North Vietnamese forces. He was a platoon commander with Company D, First Battalion, Seventh Marines. He had been in Vietnam for just over a month and was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star.

1968 - Two reduced Marine battalions, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines with two companies, and 2d Battalion, 5th Marines with three, recaptured Hue's hospital, jail, and provincial headquarters. It would take three more weeks of intense house to house fighting, and nearly a thousand Marines killed and wounded, before the imperial city was secured.

1979 - With revolution forcing the Shah of Iran to leave his country on 16 January, concern for American nationals rises. On this date the command ship La Salle (AGF-3); the destroyers Blandy (DD-943), Decatur (DDG-31), Hoel (DDG-13), and Kinkaid (DD-965); and the frigate Talbot (FFG-4) evacuate 200 Americans and 240 other foreign nationals from the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Char Bahar.

West Point disbands student clubs related to gender and race
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point has disbanded a dozen clubs on campus related to gender and race, ABC News has confirmed. The National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers Club, the Latin Cultural Club and the Native American Heritage Forum were among the clubs ordered to cease operations. The changes were made "in accordance with recent Presidential Executive Orders, Department of Defense guidance, and the Department of the Army guidance," according to a memo obtained by ABC News. The memo, dated Tuesday, comes amid President Donald Trump's sweeping eradication of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the federal government.
