1815 - Unaware of the war's end, the frigate Constitution, under the command of Commodore William Bainbridge, pursues the British frigate Cyane and sloop Levant. After firing the first broadside, the American frigate maneuvers between the two Royal Navy ships and engages both simultaneously, her gunners to port and starboard scoring repeated hits on the enemy and forcing both vessels to strike their colors.
1946 - LTJG Robert Harper '44, USN was lost when his FG-1D Corsair crashed near Naval Air Station Miami, Florida, while participating in night formation flying training. He served in the Pacific Theater from October 1943 to October 1944, presumably when he left for flight training. A native of Creston, Iowa, he was survived by his parents and two sisters. 1962 - LtCol John H. Glenn, Jr., completes the U.S. space program's first orbital flight: three orbits around the Earth in his Mercury space capsule, Friendship 7.

Gold PT uniform phaseout set as Navy streamlines sailors' seabag
The U.S. Navy will phase out its gold physical training (PT) uniform as part of an effort to simplify sailors' required seabag and reduce costs. The change eliminates redundant gear and aims to make uniform requirements easier to manage, particularly for new sailors reporting to their first commands. During the transition, sailors may continue wearing existing gold PT items until updated guidance fully removes them from the standard issue list. Navy leaders say the move supports broader uniform modernization efforts focused on practicality, affordability and consistency across the fleet while minimizing the number of clothing items sailors must maintain.

Sailors need to see themselves in 'fabric' of new warfighting instructions, CNO says
The Navy's new “Fighting Instructions,” outlined by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle, are meant to reshape how the service prepares for future conflicts by emphasizing adaptability, distributed operations, and the integration of unmanned systems. Caudle stressed that success depends on sailors at every level understanding how they fit into the strategy, saying they must see themselves in the “fabric” of the guidance. The instructions encourage a more flexible force structure—often relying on smaller, more agile units instead of large carrier deployments—and aim to spark problem-solving from leadership down to the deck plates. Ultimately, the directive focuses on building a smarter, more resilient workforce capable of operating new technologies and responding quickly to evolving operational challenges.

Bollinger, Fincantieri Marinette Marine to build Landing Ship Medium, Navy says
The U.S. Navy selected Bollinger Shipyards and Fincantieri Marinette Marine to build the new Landing Ship Medium, a vessel designed to support more agile, distributed operations. The ships will move troops, vehicles and supplies between islands and austere locations, directly supporting the U.S. Marine Corps' Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations concept. Smaller and less complex than traditional amphibious ships, they are intended to be faster to produce and more affordable. The program also strengthens the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base while giving commanders greater flexibility for logistics and maneuver in future maritime conflicts.
