Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History
1943 - The light cruiser Savannah (CL-42) and destroyer Eberle (DD-430) encounter the German blockade runner Karin in the South Atlantic. After crewmen from the destroyer board it in hopes of obtaining intelligence documents, scuttling charges set by Karin's crew explode, killing seven and wounding two members of the boarding party. The surviving members of the boarding party continue their intelligence gathering until forced to abandon ship. They are picked up by Eberle along with the blockade runner's 72-man crew.

1945 - The submarine Kete (SS-369) sinks a Japanese transport and two army cargo ships in the waters off Okinawa, Japan. Following this action, no word is received from the boat and it is declared lost at sea.

1999 - Maj Timothy Curry '86, USMC was lost when the F/A-18C Hornet he was piloting crashed in Alaska while on a training mission. He was a member of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 212, based in Japan. A native of Pine Hill, New Jersey, Curry was a high school standout: state champion in 188-pound wrestling, quarterback of the undefeated championship football team and student body president. He was entered into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1988. He was survived by his wife, Karen Lynn; son Michael, 5; daughter Alexandra, 9; parents Donald and Marcella; two brothers Don Jr. and Brian; and a sister Denise.

Sing Second Podcast featuring Mary Brigden '81
March is a cruel month, Pod Fans! We bring you the newest pod just a day removed from Boston University's last second game-winner, a shot that ended Navy's magical Patriot League run and took them out of the NCAA tournament. Chris and John break down the heartbreaker. We also chat about the amazing news about Col John Ripley '62, USMC (Ret.) being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroic actions in Vietnam. We also have a football schedule and a date for the Distinguished Graduate ceremony. We break it down. And our feature interview this week is with Mary Brigden '81. Mary was an All American sailor, an Olympic hopeful and still sails the mean waters of Coronado. She talks about her experience in one of the first classes of women at USNA and chats about the amazing fundraising women alums and the USNA Women SIG are organizing to support the April Gala and the Naval Academy. That and more on the best Alumni Association podcast there is. Beat Army. Always.

USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker: 9 March 2026
These are the approximate positions of the U.S. Navy's deployed carrier strike groups and amphibious ready groups throughout the world as of 9 March 2026, based on Navy and public data. In cases in which a CSG or ARG is conducting disaggregated operations, the chart reflects the location of the capital ship. This post was updated to correct the number of destroyers in the Eastern Mediterranean.

USS Nimitz sets off for Latin America in its last deployment
The USS Nimitz is at sea for one last job. The aging aircraft carrier, set to be decommissioned, departed its homeport in Washington State this weekend and is heading to the waters around Latin America. The USS Nimitz and its crew of several thousand sailors departed Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington, for its planned final destination at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia ahead of being decommissioned. Stars & Stripes reported on Saturday that the ship will be deploying to the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility during that final voyage. The exact locations and the length of the Nimitz's deployment are not immediately clear, but it will be the first carrier deployed to SOUTHCOM since the USS Gerald R. Ford and its carrier group left the region in February to head to the Middle East ahead of strikes on Iran.

Navy kicks off Operation ICE CAMP 2026 in the Arctic Ocean
The U.S. Navy has launched Operation ICE CAMP 2026, a three-week Arctic mission focused on strengthening submarine operations under the polar ice. Sailors, scientists and international partners are working from a temporary camp built on a drifting ice floe in the Arctic Ocean. The operation supports research, training and testing in one of the world's most challenging environments while improving readiness for Arctic missions. Submarines, including USS Delaware (SSN 791) and USS Santa Fe (SSN 763), will conduct under-ice exercises and data collection. ICE CAMP also marks a milestone in the Navy's long history of Arctic exploration and highlights the growing strategic importance of the region.

Naval Academy Parent Clubs are non-profit organizations supporting parents and families in successfully navigating the unique experiences, education, and training offered to their midshipmen during their years at the Naval Academy, as well as their opportunities in the Navy and the Marine Corps. The organization seeks to bring the Naval Academy experience to their state/region by providing a platform for learning, sharing information and advice. Additionally, they aim to provide related programs that promote friendship and fellowship among parents, families, their midshipmen and supporting volunteers.

Anchoring Tradition across generations. The Another Link in the Chain (ALINC) program forms bonds and relationships between current midshipmen and members of the 50-year class counterpart throughout the four years on the Yard and beyond. The midshipmen are buoyed and encouraged by the physical presence and moral support of the senior alumni, and members of the 50-year class counterpart enjoy working with the current midshipmen in their development of Navy and Marine officers. From Induction Day to Commissioning and beyond, the ALINC class becomes a part of the U.S. Naval Academy experience for the Brigade. The Class of 1976 is about to see off the Class of 2026. Continue to follow us here and on social media as we chronicle '76's support to the future of our Navy and Marine Corps. For more information about ALINC, click the link below.
