Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History
1922 - Langley (CV-1), the U.S. Navy's first aircraft carrier, is commissioned at Norfolk, Virginia. Formerly the collier Jupiter, Langley's appearance soon earns it the nickname “Covered Wagon,” which is also appropriate given the pioneering role it will play in the development of naval aviation.

1989 - 1stLt David Pimple '85, USMC was lost when the CH-53 helicopter he was piloting crashed near P'ohang, South Korea. Seventeen other Marines and a Navy corpsman were also killed. Pimple was raised in Sierra Vista, Arizona, where he was a standout cross country runner. His mother passed away the year before; he was survived by his father and two brothers. (The Alumni Association has lost contact with the family. If you know how to contact them please email [email protected].)

2003 - Approximately 700 coalition aircraft participate in air strikes against military targets in Iraq, including command and control facilities, early-warning radar sites, and surface-to-surface missile systems. In addition, three U.S. Navy ships—the guided-missile destroyer John S. McCain (DDG-56) and the attack submarines Columbia (SSN-771) and Providence (SSN-719)—join two British submarines in launching some fifty Tomahawk missiles at Baghdad. All told, coalition air and naval assets launch some 1,000 Tomahawk missiles and over 3,000 precision-guided munitions. In addition, U.S. Navy SEALs and Royal Marines land by helicopter to participate in a raid against the Kaabot and Mabot oil terminals in the Persian Gulf.

The event highlights Carter's service flying from aircraft carriers and his contributions to preserving naval aviation history, including donating his flight suit to the museum. China's first supercarrier
China has commissioned its first true “supercarrier,” the Type 003 Fujian, marking a major leap in naval capability and design. At roughly 80,000 tons and over 1,000 feet long, it is the largest non-nuclear warship ever built by China and its first domestically designed carrier. The ship features advanced electromagnetic catapults, enabling it to launch heavier and more capable aircraft, including airborne early warning platforms. This capability significantly expands China's power projection and operational reach, signaling its intent to build a modern, blue-water navy and compete more directly with U.S. carrier capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.

Two US counter-mine ships based in the Middle East are now in Singapore, Navy says
Two U.S. Navy counter-mine ships, USS Tulsa and USS Santa Barbara, have arrived in Singapore after operating in the Middle East. Homeported in Bahrain, the Independence-class littoral combat ships first stopped in Malaysia before entering the U.S. Seventh Fleet area. According to Navy officials, the move is part of a scheduled maintenance and logistics stop, supported by a longstanding agreement that allows U.S. ships to use Singapore as a regional hub. Both vessels are equipped to detect and destroy naval mines. Meanwhile, the third ship in the group, USS Canberra, remains in the Indian Ocean.

Sending a military care package to the Middle East? Check this list first
Before sending care packages to troops in the Middle East, officials urge checking a current list of military ZIP codes where mail delivery is temporarily suspended due to ongoing operations. About 28 military post offices and additional diplomatic locations are affected, meaning packages may be delayed or held until service resumes. The U.S. Postal Service will not return packages already sent but will store them for future delivery. Popular care package items include snacks, hygiene products and comfort items, but timing remains uncertain as operational priorities limit mail flow. The key takeaway: confirm mailing availability before sending anything.
