Alum named President of Dakota State University (Ballard '79)

The South Dakota Board of Regents (BOR) has announced the selection of Dr. John R. Ballard as the next president of Dakota State University (DSU), following a national search that identified experienced leaders in technology-driven education.

Dr. Ballard currently serves as President of the National Intelligence University (NIU), where he leads a multi-campus institution focused on workforce-ready certificates and technology-centered degree programs. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation, partnerships, and measurable student outcomes; experience that aligns with DSU’s mission.

Dr. Ballard holds a B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy, an M.A. from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America.

Dr. Ballard will assume his new role this June.
