Koepp ’10 among Dell Med graduates with 100% residency matches
In its sixth graduating class, Dell Medical School at the University of Texas achieved a 100 % residency match rate for all 40 graduates on National Match Day 2026. Among the matched physicians was KC Koepp ’10, a Naval Academy graduate who spent eight years as a Marine Corps pilot before attending Dell Med and matched into general surgery. Match Day is a nationwide event where graduating medical students simultaneously learn where they will begin their residency training—the next critical step in their medical careers. The day is highly emotional and eagerly anticipated, symbolizing years of hard work, late nights, and dedication paying off. Koepp shared that her excitement rivaled the joy of her Naval Academy graduation, where hats were thrown and planes flew overhead. Surrounded by her three sons, she opened her match envelope, celebrating the start of her journey as a physician. ( Link)

USS George H.W. Bush departs for eeployment, USS Gerald Ford could be extended to 11 months
The U.S. Navy has deployed the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush from Norfolk as part of a planned rotation to support operations in the Middle East. The deployment comes as the USS Gerald R. Ford remains at sea far longer than expected, with its mission potentially stretching to about 11 months—well beyond the typical seven-month deployment. Navy leaders extended Gerald R. Ford’s deployment to maintain a strong carrier presence during ongoing tensions with Iran, though the prolonged timeline is straining maintenance schedules and crew readiness. George H.W. Bush is expected to either relieve Gerald R. Ford or reinforce U.S. naval forces in the region, ensuring sustained operational coverage.

Fewer service members died by suicide in 2024 than year prior, report finds
A new Pentagon report found that fewer U.S. service members died by suicide in 2024 compared to 2023, marking an encouraging short-term decline. About 471 deaths were recorded, an 11% drop from the previous year, with decreases seen across active-duty troops, the National Guard, and reserves. However, officials caution that long-term trends remain concerning, as suicide rates among active-duty personnel have generally risen since 2011. Most cases involved young enlisted men, often linked to mental health challenges, relationship issues, or workplace stress. Defense leaders emphasized ongoing prevention efforts but noted more work is needed to sustain progress.

Minesweeping technology in the Middle East is ‘a very good package,’ Caudle says
ADM Daryl Caudle said the Navy’s mine countermeasure capabilities in the Middle East form a “very good package” when fully integrated. The system centers on Independence-class littoral combat ships, MH-60S helicopters and unmanned surface vehicles that detect and neutralize mines. However, Pentagon testing has raised concerns about reliability and overall effectiveness, noting some systems are not yet fully operationally suitable. Caudle emphasized that traditional minesweepers remain the most dependable option. He also highlighted the ongoing challenge of maintaining readiness for mine warfare, a mission that is infrequent but critical amid heightened regional tensions.
