Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History
1883 - Naval Cadet Peter Miller, Class of 1882, USN died of injuries he sustained the day before when a steam pipe burst aboard USS Tennessee (1865). He was born in Stockholm, Sweden and raised in Topeka, Kansas; “Almost every citizen of Topeka who resided here eight or ten years ago knew Peter Miller, son of Dr. N. Miller, veterinary surgeon. Peter lived in this city from quite a lad, went to our public schools, where he was first in his classes.” Peter was survived by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

1942 - Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific FADM Chester W. Nimitz '05, USN (Ret.) assumes additional duties as Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas (CINCPOA), responsible for operations in the North, Central and South Pacific. Lieutenant General Douglas A. MacArthur is named Commander, Southwest Pacific Area.

1945 - On Okinawa, Marines of the III Amphibious Corps continued to make good progress all along their front, clearing Zampa Misaki and seizing the Katchin Peninsula, thus effectively cutting the island in two. By this date (D+2), III AC elements had reached objectives thought originally to require 11 days to take.

1965 - Aircraft from the carriers Hancock (CV-19) and Coral Sea (CVA-43) strike the North Vietnamese transportation network for the first time, destroying the Dong Phuong highway bridge south of Hanoi, the North Vietnamese capital. During this strike, naval aviators make their first observation of airborne enemy MiG fighters.

AMERICAN SYSTEMS announced the passing of co-founder Forrest “Woody” Ramsey, Jr. '52, whose career was deeply tied to Navy service and mission support. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Ramsey served in both surface warfare and the submarine force, earning his Dolphins and building a strong foundation in undersea operations. After active duty, he continued advancing Navy priorities in the defense industry, contributing to submarine programs and TRIDENT command and control systems—key elements of strategic deterrence. As co-founder of AMERICAN SYSTEMS, he helped shape the company's early focus on supporting Navy platforms and systems engineering. Ramsey's legacy reflects a lifelong commitment to the Navy, spanning service at sea to strengthening the technologies and capabilities that support the fleet.

Navy's top admiral indicates carrier Gerald R. Ford fire stopped sorties for two days
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the U.S. Navy's newest and largest aircraft carrier, was only able to fly sorties two days after a 12 March laundry fire was extinguished, the U.S. Navy's top officer said, in the first indication that the blaze hindered combat operations against Iran. When the fire broke out, the ship was operating in the Red Sea as part of Operation Epic Fury. A statement from the US 5th Fleet on 12 March said the ship remained fully operational after the fire, which it said was not combat-related and had left two sailors with non-life-threatening injuries.

Golden Dome, ships and missiles top Trump's $1.5 trillion defense wish list
President Trump is proposing a $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal 2027, marking a historic increase focused on modernizing U.S. military capabilities. A key component is the $185 billion “Golden Dome” missile defense system, alongside continued investment in advanced aircraft and weapons production. For the Navy, the plan prioritizes expanding shipbuilding, including Virginia-class submarines and additional surface ships, reinforcing undersea dominance and Indo-Pacific deterrence. The proposal also addresses rebuilding munitions stockpiles and strengthening the defense industrial base. While ambitious, the plan faces scrutiny in Congress, where lawmakers will debate costs, priorities and long-term sustainability.

Navy vet 'Patriotic Kenny' faces terminal cancer with eye toward helping others
Back in the fall of 2021, 79-year-old Navy veteran Kenny Jary was lamenting the demise of his decades-old mobility scooter. It was too old to fix, too costly to replace and too essential to go without. His bad luck, however, quickly turned around as enough donations flooded into a GoFundMe page to not only buy a new scooter but also to fund a foundation to provide free scooters for other veterans in need. Today, Jary, who lives in a small Minnesota town near St. Paul, is coping with terminal lung cancer and donors have once again flocked to a GoFundMe page intended to help him with medical, hospice and funeral expenses.
