Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History
1913 - The Secretary of the Navy approves performance standards for qualification as a "Navy Air Pilot." On 22 March 1915, the designation is changed to "Naval Aviator," which it remains to this day.

1939 - LTJG Glenn Dunagan ’33, USN and LTJG Thompson Guthrie, Jr. ’34, USN were lost when the SBU-1 airplane they were aboard crashed near Del Mar, California. Glenn had worked on a railroad in New Mexico and Colorado before spending a year at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Following graduation from the Naval Academy he was sent to Germany for two years of language training, at which point he completed four years of sea duty. He had only been a naval aviator since December 1938. Glenn was survived by his wife, daughter and son. Thompson was a native of Kentucky and received his wings as an Ensign in June 1937; his previous tour was aboard the cruiser Northampton. He was survived by his wife and mother.

1959 - LtCol John H. Glenn, Jr. was named as one of the original seven Project Mercury astronauts selected for space training. The seven astronauts, all volunteers, were selected by NASA from an initial group of 110 leading military test pilots. Three years later, on 20 February 1962, Col Glenn would become the first American to orbit the Earth.

2010 - While on an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, USS Ashland (LSD-48) comes under fire from pirates. Ashland returned fire and apprehended the suspected pirates, who were charged in the United States. No crew members were injured in the attack.

Waypoints Podcast: '95 joins us en masse!
“We did something new this week as we build up to the 50th! Five amazing women from the great class of '95 joined Kate and Jeannette for a wide-ranging discussion... we had Molly Boron joining us from Maryland, Heidi Huerter Lenzini joining us from Virginia, Megan Humbert Schwartz joining us from the UK, Motisola Bowman joining us from Virginia, and Rachel Medrano Oden joining us from California.

Each time we have these discussions, we are so humbled by the backgrounds, achievements, and experiences of our Navy alumnae! And '95 did not disappoint. Please join us to hear about NAPS, what it was like to start Plebe year in the shadow of the Tailhook scandal, and flying, floating, and leading in the Navy. We also talk about funeral homes, how Morrissey's songs all sound the same (sorry, Rachel), and sailing around the world.

Thank you to Molly, Megan, Motisola, Rachel, and Heidi for taking time out of your Saturday to talk with us - and to Heidi for organizing! Thank you to the USNA Women's Glee Club as well and to the USNA AA&F for your fantastic support of this work (and to Natasha for your masterful editing)!

Until next time...onward to the 50th!"

Department of War annual recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month
The Department of War (DoW) recognizes April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month as part of its ongoing efforts to counter sexual assault in the Total Force. "Sexual assault is unacceptable, period, and has no place in our military. It is contrary to our institutional values, the warrior ethos and our overall readiness," said Anthony J. Tata, under secretary of war for personnel and readiness, adding that, "Awareness, prevention and support are a shared responsibility. We expect every member of the Department of War community to help root out harmful behaviors, maintain standards and continue to drive necessary change throughout the force." Eliminating sexual assault in the military requires unwavering, year-round commitment. The ongoing DoW sexual assault awareness and prevention campaign, "STEP FORWARD: Prevent. Report. Advocate," calls on the Total Force to confront and counter harmful behaviors, provide victim assistance and strengthen command climates.

Leaders praise troops who rescued downed airmen in Iran
Enemy forces in Iran downed two airmen in an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet, flying in support of Operation Epic Fury, 3 April; both service members were successfully rescued in just under 48 hours from when the mission to save them began.  During a White House press conference 6 April , President Trump described his decision to launch the operation as risky because of the significant number of U.S. personnel involved in the rescue mission.  "It's a hard decision to make, but in the U.S. military, we leave no American behind; we don't do it," Trump said. A rescue force composed of 21 aircraft, including A-10 Thunderbolt attack planes, KC-130 search and rescue aircraft, HH-60W Jolly Green IIs and a package of Air Force special warfare combat rescue officers and pararescue operators, went into enemy territory to locate and recover the downed pilot and the weapons system officer.
