ACADEMY & GRADUATE HAPPENINGS

Alumni Association Roadshow headed west
The chapter and parent club roadshow is coming to Louisville, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Columbus beginning on Friday 21 February. Friday's stop includes cheering on the Men's Gymnastics team as they compete in the Winter Cup in Louisville, KY.  Next month, the US Naval Academy Alumni Association engagement team will be heading to the Pacific Northwest with stops in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Over the course of four years, the Alumni Association hopes to visit every chapter and parent club around the country to provide the gouge on the programs and services provided by the Alumni Association and learn how we can better support our alumni and parent communities. These events also provide a great way for alumni and parents to connect with one another to grow their chapters and parent clubs and further engage those in their community.  In April, the roadshow heads to New England. Stay tuned for dates and details. You'll also find these events on the chapter and parent club pages on myUSNA. The new Oregon/Idaho/Washington Roadshow dates are reflected in the Daily Shipmate calendar.

Judge questions motives for Trump's order banning transgender troops
A federal judge on Tuesday questioned President Donald Trump's motives for issuing an executive order that calls for banning transgender troops from serving in the U.S. military, describing a portion of the directive as “frankly ridiculous.” U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes indicated that she won't rule before early March on whether to temporarily block the Trump administration from enforcing the order, which plaintiffs' attorneys have said illegally discriminates against transgender troops.

Naval Academy graduate set to buy Annapolis Great Harvest Bread following closure
Rumors of the closure of the Great Harvest Bread Co. on Ridgely Avenue rattled the community, and those rumors came true Feb. 8 — though after a rapid turn of events, the bakery is now set to reopen Thursday. In January, owner Frank Dembia was looking to sell the bread and pastry business before his lease ended. At the time, Dembia was talking to potential buyers, but the bakery's future was uncertain. That was, until Joe Kirby read a Capital Gazette story about the potential closure and decided to check out the business. He hit it off with Dembia, and now Kirby is coming on as the bakery's new general manager with plans to purchase the business sometime later this year. No date has been set.
