Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Mike Hewitt, who will be the speaker at the Noank Memorial Day ceremony, plans to recognize all the veterans who have given their lives or served in defense of the country.

He also wants people to think about the community and how it is a Naval submarine community.

Hewitt, 83, served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 until 1990. Born and raised in Minnesota, he went to the U.S. Naval Academy for his education and then to nuclear power training. He started going to sea on submarines and about a year later met his wife, Lynda, from Manchester, and they got married a year after that.

As a submariner, Hewitt said he also plans to speak about the greater community’s role in submarinebuilding and the evolution of submarines, Electric Boat and the Navy.

Parade details: The Noank Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10 a. m. Monday, May 25, on Main Street. The parade route will get closed to traffic around 9:15 a.m.
