New march, “Aspera Est Libertas,” composed by a recent USNA graduate (Usadi '26)

A recent U.S. Naval Academy graduate has revived a tradition dormant for more than a century by composing “Aspera Est Libertas”, a march dedicated to the Class of 2026.
Ensign Benjamin Ngo Usadi, who graduated and commissioned in May, worked with the USNA Band to create the piece, marking the first class-dedicated march by the band in more than 100 years.
The title, meaning “Adversity is Freedom,” draws inspiration from the Class of 2026 motto and reflects themes of perseverance and personal growth. The composition reconnects today's midshipmen with a historic Academy tradition that once produced works such as “Anchors Aweigh.”.
