USVRON 1 hosts next generation unmanned systems training for midshipmen
Nine midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy and Navy ROTC units across the country had the opportunity to observe firsthand how Unmanned Surface Vessel Squadron One (USVRON 1) trains and prepares to deliver medium unmanned surface vessel (mUSV) capabilities to the future fight during a two‑week summer cruise with the command. The midshipmen were given an inside look at the Navy’s advances in unmanned systems that will support the future of the Surface Fleet. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao ’96 has appointed Andrew Magliochetti as the first Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for the Defense Industrial Base, a newly created office focused on strengthening the nation’s maritime industrial capacity. Magliochetti, formerly director of the Navy’s Office of Small Business Programs, will oversee efforts to expand domestic manufacturing, improve supply chain resilience and accelerate the adoption of innovative commercial technologies across the fleet. Navy leaders say the office will help address industrial challenges affecting shipbuilding, modernization, and readiness while supporting the long-term growth of the Navy-Marine Corps team and the broader defense industrial base.

Navy Flight Demonstration Team Stand Down Ends, Growler Team Still Grounded
The Navy has ended a safety stand down for most of its tactical flight demonstration teams, allowing several squadrons flying F/A-18 Super Hornets and F-35C Lightning II aircraft to resume air show performances. The stand down was ordered in May following the crash of two EA-18G Growlers from Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 129 during an air show in Idaho. While all four aviators safely ejected, the incident prompted a review of demonstration team operations. The Growler demo team remains grounded pending the outcome of that review, while other tactical demonstration teams have been cleared to return to the air show circuit after being found compliant with established naval aviation safety practices.

U.S. Navy eyes port stops in Africa, India after USS Abraham Lincoln’s marathon deployment
After the demanding deployment of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, Navy leaders are reassessing how they support sailors during extended operations. Chief of Naval Operations ADM Daryl Caudle, USN said the deployment exposed challenges in resupply, particularly in providing everyday items such as hygiene products, coffee and ship store goods during long periods without port visits. In response, the Navy is reviewing pre-deployment stockpiling practices and considering additional port-call locations in Africa and India to improve logistics and crew quality of life during future deployments. Officials say the lessons learned will help strengthen sustainment, readiness and support for sailors and their families during lengthy operations at sea.

Navy Accepts Delivery of USNS Hector A. Cafferata Jr.
The U.S. Navy has accepted delivery of USNS Hector A. Cafferata Jr. (ESB 8), an Expeditionary Sea Base built by General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego. The ship joins the fleet following successful sea trials and will provide flexible sea-based logistics and operational support for a wide range of military missions. Named for Medal of Honor recipient Marine Corps Reserve Pfc. Hector A. Cafferata Jr., who displayed extraordinary heroism during the Korean War’s Battle of Chosin Reservoir, the vessel honors his legacy of courage and selfless service. Navy officials said the addition of ESB 8 strengthens maritime readiness and supports the service’s vision for the Fleet of the Future

Steelers sign 2 players and more in flurry of roster moves
The Pittsburgh Steelers executed a wave of roster moves a few days out from their preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. On Monday, the Steelers not only activated Jalen Ramsey off the physically unable to perform list but signed cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau and running back Alex Tecza ’26, as well as waiving defensive back Israel Mukuamu via an injury settlement and releasing rookie kicker Laith Marjan. Tecza had a similar path to that of Eli Heidenreich ’26, as he's also a Pittsburgh native who attended Mt. Lebanon High School and played collegiate football at Navy. During his three seasons (2023-2025) as a Navy Midshipman, Tecza recorded 2,687 yards from scrimmage and 26 total touchdowns.

Senior wide receiver Hutchison ’27 named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List
Navy senior wide receiver Luke Hutchison ’27 has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, an honor recognizing the top offensive player in Division I football who demonstrates excellence in performance, leadership, perseverance, sportsmanship, and community involvement. Hutchison earned recognition after an injury-shortened 2025 season in which he scored four touchdowns on just six touches, including three receiving scores and one rushing touchdown. Despite missing four games with a broken collarbone, he remained one of Navy’s most explosive offensive threats. The watch list includes 107 players nationwide, with semifinalists to be announced in November and the winner selected in December.
