1958 - The Tartar surface-to-air missile makes its first successful flight at the Naval Ordnance Test Station China Lake, California, successfully intercepting an F6F drone. The missile was among the earliest surface-to-air missiles to equip U.S. Navy ships. Also in 1958, CDR William Allen '43, USN was lost when the aircraft he was piloting crashed in the Mediterranean Sea. He was commanding officer of Fighter Squadron (VF) 11, operating from USS Essex (CVA 9). Following graduation he served aboard USS Nevada (BB 36) in both the Aleutians Campaign and Normandy invasions; in October 1944 he went to flight training. During the Korean War he was operations officer for Carrier Air Group Four, flying on combat missions from USS Lake Champlain (CV 39). His penultimate tour was as aide to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. William was survived by his wife, two daughters and mother. Other alumni lost on this day are listed at Virtual Memorial Hall.
1981 - With Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi proclaiming a “line of death” in the Gulf of Sidra beyond which U.S. forces should not pass, two Libyan Su-22 fighters attack a pair of F-14 Tomcats of Fighter Squadron (VF) 41 from the carrier Nimitz (CVN-68), which promptly splash both Su-22s.

Acting Secretary of the Navy appoints Tanner '91 as Chief Information Officer
|
|
Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao '96 has appointed M. Barry Tanner '91 as the Navy's permanent chief information officer (CIO), placing the Naval Academy graduate in charge of the Department of the Navy's $12 billion information technology portfolio. Tanner will advise Navy leadership while overseeing efforts to modernize digital infrastructure, strengthen cybersecurity and advance the service's use of artificial intelligence under the Navy's Information Superiority Vision 2.0.
A former naval officer who retired as a captain after a 31-year active and reserve career, Tanner most recently served as the Navy's deputy CIO and director of operations for the Program Executive Office for Digital and Enterprise. In his new role, he will help accelerate data and AI initiatives designed to give sailors and Marines faster, more secure access to information in contested environments. For Naval Academy alumni, Tanner's appointment highlights another graduate stepping into a key leadership position helping shape the future of naval warfare, technology and decision-making across the Fleet and Marine Corps.

Airmen rescue 5 Navy sailors in California with HH-60Ws
|
|
Five Navy sailors were safely rescued after an MH-60S Seahawk experienced a hard landing during a high-altitude training flight near Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California, on Aug. 10. Airmen from the U.S. Air Force's 355th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and 88th Test and Evaluation Squadron rapidly responded, launching two HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters from Nellis Air Force Base to support the recovery effort. After receiving notification of the incident, Air Force personnel generated and launched the rescue aircraft within 30 minutes despite maintenance challenges. Rescue crews established contact with the sailors, assessed their condition and determined that none were injured. The team then repositioned to a more accessible landing area before successfully extracting all five sailors and transporting them safely back to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake later that afternoon. The operation highlighted the close coordination and readiness shared across the Navy and Air Force in responding to real-world emergencies.

USS John F. Kennedy completes acceptance sea trials
|
|
USS John F. Kennedy moves one step closer to joining the Fleet. The Navy's newest Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, USS John F. Kennedy completes acceptance sea trials, successfully completed acceptance sea trials on 15 August marking one of the final milestones before its planned 2027 delivery to the Fleet. During the multi-day trial period, the carrier underwent testing at sea following its departure from Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. Acceptance trials follow successful builder's trials completed earlier this year and are designed to evaluate the ship's readiness before the Navy formally takes delivery. Named for President John F. Kennedy, the carrier is the second ship to bear his name and represents a major investment in the Navy's next generation of aircraft carrier capabilities.
