Today in Navy And Marine Corps History

2002 - The Secretary of the Navy announces that the name of the next San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock will be New York in honor of the state, city, and people that suffered so much during the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks. In December 2002, scrap steel removed from “ground zero” at the former site of the World Trade Center is sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, to be included in the ship.
7 September 1944 - Capt Leon Chabot ’40, USMC was lost when the Shin’yō Maru, a POW ship, was sunk by USS Paddle (SS 263). Only 83 of the 750 prisoners survived the sinking and subsequent machine gun fire of other ships in the Japanese convoy. “Chab” was captured by the Japanese when Corregidor was surrendered on 6 May 1942. He had been a member of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines since sometime after March 1941, and in February 1942 Leon was awarded the Silver Star for “gallantry in action.” At the Naval Academy he was a noted track athlete, and was noted as “Holder Naval Academy 100-yd Dash Record, 9.6 sec.” He was from Gardner, Massachusetts, and was survived by his father and sister. Other alumni lost on this day are listed at Virtual Memorial Hall.

Bradley was lost when the rotor of the Cobra gunship he was piloting broke in flight, causing it to crash onto the tarmac at Montgomery Airfield, San Diego, California. Mike executive officer of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) 773; he had been in the reserves since 1991. Mike was a native of Huntington, New York, and attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School before arriving at the Naval Academy. He was a standout lacrosse player in high school, at Navy, and continued playing and coaching high school when he was stationed in San Diego. Mike was survived by his wife, parents, three sisters, and two brothers.

Since opening our doors on 8 September 2023, the Fluegel Alumni Center (FAC) has become one of Annapolis' premier event destinations. Over the past three years, we have welcomed everything from weddings, receptions, conferences, retirement ceremonies and memorial services to fashion shows, galas and community celebrations. The center has hosted countless Naval Academy traditions, including Plebe Parent Mixers, Graduation 101 programs, Athletic Foundation Ice Cream Socials, the Annapolis Hooley, the 50 Years of Women Gala and Conference, and, of course, memorable football and Beat Army tailgates. An incredible weekend in Annapolis!

|
From reunion celebrations and Distinguished Graduate Award festivities to football, music and Shipmate camaraderie, this past weekend showcased the very best of the Naval Academy alumni community. We welcomed the Classes of 1961, 1981 and 1996 back to Annapolis to reconnect with classmates and celebrate the lifelong bonds forged at the Academy. We recognized our 2026 Distinguished Graduate Award recipients throughout the weekend, including a special on-field recognition during Navy Football. Congratulations once again to ADM Patrick M. Walsh ’77, USN (Ret.), VADM Mark I. Fox ’78, USN (Ret.), LtGen William D. Beydler ’81, USMC (Ret.) and CAPT Christopher J. Cassidy ’93, USN (Ret.).

Alumni and friends gathered at the Fluegel Alumni Center for Alumni Pregame, where we also hosted a live edition of the Sing Second Podcast. The 1stLt Travis Manion ’04, USMC, GMC Sierra truck made its Annapolis debut, highlighting the Travis Manion Foundation logo on the hood, with additional accents on the doors and headrests.

The weekend also featured an outstanding performance by Jackson Perkins ’21, along with receptions, tailgates, conversations and countless memorable moments. We also officially opened the Naval Academy Athletic Foundation Pavilion Tower. If that wasn't enough, we kicked off the football season with the largest home opener since 2013 at NMCMS and ended the day with Navy singing second after defeating Towson, 42-15!
Our team captured photos and video from every corner of the celebration, and we're hard at work organizing it all. Beginning tomorrow, reunion galleries, DGA photos and additional event coverage will be available online, giving attendees the opportunity to revisit the weekend and share those memories. Stay tuned. Cao ’96 needs House, Senate waivers for SECNAV confirmation
|
|
Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao ’96 will need approval from both the House and Senate before he can be confirmed as the Navy’s permanent civilian leader, according to USNI News. Cao, a 1996 Naval Academy graduate and retired Navy captain, left active duty in October 2021. Current law requires service secretaries to be separated from active military service for seven years, making him ineligible until 2028 without a waiver. President Donald Trump recently nominated Cao for the position after he had served several months as acting secretary. Congressional action will determine whether his nomination can move forward.

Navy works with 80 female sailors to evaluate future uniforms
|
|
What should the next generation of Navy uniforms look and feel like? The Navy recently turned to the experts who wear them every day. Eighty female sailors participated in a week-long fit evaluation in Virginia, testing prototype slacks, shirts and jumper tops while providing feedback on comfort, sizing and functionality. Researchers from the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility gathered measurements and insights that will help guide future uniform design decisions. The effort is part of the Navy's ongoing Size Modernization Program, which aims to improve fit and wearability across the fleet, ensuring sailors can focus on the mission while looking and feeling their best.

|
|
USNA alumni are invited to attend the 44th Michelson Memorial Lecture TODAY, 8 September in Mahan Hall. This year's lecturer, Professor Jonathan Wilker of Purdue University, will present From the Beach to the Fleet: Biological and Biomimetic Adhesives, exploring how marine organisms inspire new technologies for naval and medical applications. A reception featuring light hors d'oeuvres, coffee, tea and music by a USNA Band ensemble will begin at 11:45 a.m. ET in the Mahan Hall Lobby, followed by the lecture from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m. ET. Attendance is open to all interested alumni with Yard access credentials.

Climb aboard YP 700, a U.S. Naval Academy training vessel where midshipmen take a maritime version of driver's ed
|
|
At the United States Naval Academy, every midshipman learns to drive. Their driver's ed curriculum doesn't involve slow circles in empty parking lots or parallel parking tests. Instead, the future naval leaders learn how to drive, steer, and navigate a ship by going out on the water and doing just that. After midshipmen learn the basics of navigation, boat handling, man-overboard maneuvers, and standard commands in the classroom, they put their knowledge into practice on training vessels known as yard patrol craft. During my visit to the Naval Academy in August, I got to climb aboard the yard patrol craft YP 700 to see how midshipmen learn shiphandling and navigation on the job. Take a look.

Alumna assumes command of Mayport Helo Squadron
|
|
CDR Natalya Cooper ’10 took Command of HSM-48 in Mayport, FL. 3 September. Cooper is a native of Seattle, Washington and earned her commission and a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from USNA in 2010. She was designated a Naval Aviator in September 2012. Commander Cooper has piloted the MH-60R throughout her aviation career. Her tours include assistant operations officer at HSM-72; instructor pilot and assistant operations officer at HSM-40; maintenance officer and operations officer as a plank owner at HSM-50. At sea, she served aboard USS Gravely (DDG 107) and USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), deploying in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Woodson NAAA’s Athlete of the Week, presented by USAA
|
|
Navy quarterback Braxton Woodson has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week presented by USAA following his standout performance in the Midshipmen's season-opening 42-15 win over Towson. In front of the biggest Navy football home opener crowd since 2013, Woodson rushed for a career-high 200 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, helping lead a dominant Navy ground attack that piled up 506 rushing yards, the program's highest total since 2017. His touchdown runs covered 38, 8 and 4 yards as the Mids rolled to victory before more than 32,000 fans in Annapolis. Woodson was also named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll.
