1943 – A powerful Japanese surface force under the command of Rear Admiral Sentaro Omori, IJN, intent on disrupting the American landings at Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, runs into four light cruisers and eight destroyers of Task Force 39 under the command of RADM Aaron S. Merrill, USN, USNA Class of 1912. In the resulting Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, U.S. destroyers sink the Japanese destroyer Hatsukaze, while gunfire sends the light cruiser Sendai to the bottom. Four other Japanese vessels are damaged. Task Force 39 loses no ships, but four suffer damage. Though the Japanese do attack the retiring task force by air, carrier raids against the Buka-Bonis area launched from Saratoga (CV-3) and Princeton (CV-23) prevent the enemy from mounting serious air opposition.

Call for Distinguished Graduate Award nominations for 2027
The nomination window for the 2027 Distinguished Graduate Award (DGA) opens on 1 November 2026 and closes on 15 February 2027. Since the award’s inception in 1998, 122 graduates—spanning the classes of 1931 through 2006—have been honored. The DGA recognizes up to four living graduates annually who have distinguished themselves in their fields and and demonstrate sustained, active support for the U.S. Naval Academy, the USNA Alumni Association and Foundation or USNA-affiliated groups. No graduate can be a DGA if they are not first nominated by an Association member. For information about the program, visit the DGA webpage. For guidance on preparing and submitting a nomination package, review the DGA Nominator Gouge. Direct any questions by email to the program manager Wes Huey ’87 or by phone at 410-295-4023.

Long deployments to be Navy standard for next couple years, MCPON, CNO say
Navy sailors should expect 10- to 11-month carrier strike group deployments for the next couple of years before returning closer to the traditional seven-month schedule, according to John Perryman. Navy leaders said setting realistic expectations provides greater certainty for sailors and families amid continued operational demands. Daryl Caudle emphasized the importance of port calls during extended deployments, allowing sailors time to reconnect with family and recharge. Navy officials are also adjusting support programs for sailors returning home after lengthy deployments.
