San Diego's OnWord Theatre plans immersive staging of war crimes drama '9 Circles' (Wood '18)
November is National Veterans and Military Families Month, so staging a military-themed play this month in San Diego a city with a rich military history makes sense. But playwright Bill Cain's 2010 play "9 Circles" isn't your ordinary military play. It's the fictional story of Daniel Edward Reeves, played by actor Eli Wood '18 (a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle's 2025 Actor of the Year awardee), a former American soldier facing trial for war crimes he and others committed in Iraq. As Reeves winds his way through the legal system and is forced to confront the depravity of his actions, he takes a psychological journey of the soul similar to that of Dante Alighieri's travels through the nine circles of Hell in his 14th-century epic poem "Inferno." The play is being produced in San Diego by OnWord Theatre, a 2-year-old, Black women-owned theater company co-founded by producing artistic director Marti Gobel and marketing director Danielle Bunch.
