As the VA leans on automation, errors in veterans’ claims soar
As the VA leans on automation, errors in veterans’ claims soar reports that the Department of Veterans Affairs’ growing use of automated tools to process disability claims has coincided with a sharp increase in errors involving medical evidence. VA data show evidence-collection errors climbed from more than 66,000 in fiscal 2021 to more than 329,000 in fiscal 2026, while the share of higher-level reviews sent back for reconsideration rose from about 23% to 35%. Veterans, advocates and some VA employees say the Automated Decision Support system can overlook medical details, potentially causing delays or improper denials. VA officials dispute that automation is driving the errors, saying technology has helped process more claims, reduce backlogs and improve overall accuracy.

The Navy’s planned FF(X) frigate could offer a more practical approach to rebuilding surface fleet capacity after the cancellation of the Constellation-class program. Writing in Proceedings, Andy Hong argues that pairing smaller, more affordable frigates with unmanned surface vessels could help the Navy expand its fleet while addressing shipbuilding and personnel constraints. Rather than loading each frigate with the capabilities of a destroyer, the concept would use FF(X) ships alongside unmanned vessels for missions including antisubmarine warfare, mine hunting and fleet defense. That approach could free Arleigh Burke-class destroyers for high-end missions where their missile and air-defense capabilities are most needed. With the first FF(X) planned to enter the fleet in 2028, Hong argues the program represents an opportunity to build a more scalable, flexible surface force while avoiding the delays, redesigns and rising costs that have challenged previous shipbuilding efforts.

OnWord Theatre presents '9 Circles' featuring alum Wood ’18
November is National Veterans and Military Families Month, so staging a military-themed play this month in San Diego a city with a rich military history makes sense. But playwright Bill Cain's 2010 play "9 Circles" isn't your ordinary military play. It's the fictional story of Daniel Edward Reeves, played by actor and alum Eli Wood '18 (a San Diego Theatre Critics Circle's 2025 Actor of the Year awardee), a former American soldier facing trial for war crimes he and others committed in Iraq. As Reeves winds his way through the legal system and is forced to confront the depravity of his actions, he takes a psychological journey of the soul similar to that of Dante Alighieri's travels through the nine circles of Hell in his 14th-century epic poem "Inferno." The play is being produced in San Diego by OnWord Theatre, a 2-year-old, Black women-owned theater company co-founded by producing artistic director Marti Gobel and marketing director Danielle Bunch.

Navy Boxing takes Team Title against West Point and Air Force Academy
This past weekend, the Navy Men's and Women's Boxing Teams competed against both the West Point and Air Force Academy teams at the 17th annual Detroit Athletic Club sponsored matches. Other than the NCBA National year-end tournament, these matches are the only head-to-head-to-head matches of the year and, as such, are hotly contested. Navy again won the team title with four unanimous decisions (1/c V. Rawls over Army, 2/c I. Muhammadiyeva over Air Force, 3/c K. Williams over Army and 3/c J. Owmbyu over Air Force opponents). 1/c P.D. Traore and 3/c T. Serrano lost extremely close split decisions to Army and Air Force, respectively.
Navy's dual meet against Army will be on 10 December in New York City.
