TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY

1922 - Langley (CV-1), the U.S. Navy's first aircraft carrier, was commissioned at Norfolk, Virginia. Formerly the collier Jupiter, Langley's appearance soon earned it the nickname “Covered Wagon,” which is also appropriate given the pioneering role it played in the development of naval aviation.

1989 - 1LT David Pimple '85, USMC was lost when the CH-53 helicopter he was piloting crashed near P'ohang, South Korea. Seventeen other Marines and a Navy corpsman were also killed.

2003 - Approximately 700 coalition aircraft participated in air strikes against military targets in Iraq, including command and control facilities, early-warning radar sites, and surface-to-surface missile systems.

Navy Head Men's Basketball Coach Ed DeChellis to retire after 14 seasons at the Naval Academy, 29 years as a head coach
Ed DeChellis has announced he will retire after 14 seasons as the head men's basketball coach at the Naval Academy and 29 years as a collegiate head coach.  DeChellis coached more games (426) at Navy than any other coach in school history, surpassing Ben Carnevale (417) earlier this year. "It has been a great honor to serve at the Naval Academy and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach so many exceptional young men," said DeChellis.  "I would like to thank Chet Gladchuk for giving me that opportunity 14 years ago and for his support and extraordinary leadership during my tenure. The Naval Academy represents a set of timeless values that form the bedrock of our nation. I am proud to have played a small role in advancing those values through sport." Navy will begin a national search for its next head coach immediately. Associate head coach Jon Perry has been named the interim head coach.

GOVERNMENT & MILITARY NEWS

Pentagon is cutting up to 60,000 civilian jobs. About a third of those took voluntary resignations
Roughly 50,000 to 60,000 civilian jobs will be cut in the Defense Department, but fewer than 21,000 workers who took a voluntary resignation plan are leaving in the coming months, a senior defense official told reporters Tuesday. To reach the goal of a 5% to 8% cut in a civilian workforce of more than 900,000, the official said, the Pentagon aims to slash about 6,000 positions a month by simply not replacing workers who routinely leave. A key concern is that service members may then be tapped to fill those civilian jobs left empty by the hiring freeze. But the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide personnel details, said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wants to ensure the cuts don't hurt military readiness.

Marine commanding officers have final say on medical shaving exemptions
All Marines with a current shaving waiver for a medical condition must be reevaluated by a medical officer in the next three months, according to a Marine Administrative Message, or MARADMIN released Thursday. The order applies to Marines who hold medically approved exemptions from shaving rules — or 'shaving chits' —  for a painful skin condition known as pseudofolliculitis barbae or PFB. The condition is far more common in Black men than in other racial groups.  The new order also appears to reverse rules issued in 2022 that prevented Marines from being kicked out of the service solely for shaving issues. Thousands of service members, including many Marines, are exempted from service shaving rules because of PFB and other skin conditions under which daily shaving can be both painful and leave long-term scars.
