TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY

1925 - Lieutenant Commander John Dale Price, Class of 1916, performed the first night landing on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier when he trapped on board Langley (CV-1) while it steamed off the coast of California. Night operations were not routine on U.S. Navy flattops until after World War II.

1945 - Easter Sunday brought the assault on Okinawa, Japan, with naval gunfire and aircraft supporting the landing of Army troops and Marines under the command of Army Lieutenant General Simon Bolivar Buckner. By nightfall, some 65,000 men were ashore. Kamikazes damaged the battleship West Virginia (BB-48) and two attack transports, and in the coming days, the “divine wind” struck the ships operating off Okinawa with increasing deadliness.

1985 - LCDR Derek Holmquist '73, USN and LT Glenn Ziegler '81, USN were lost when the A-6 Intruder they were aboard crashed off the coast of Venezuela during a training mission. They were members of Attack Squadron (VA) 35 and operating from USS Nimitz (CVN 68).

Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk is retiring after 24 years as the President of the Naval Academy Athletic Association and Director of Athletics. Gladchuk is currently the second-longest tenured athletic director in the FBS. Since Gladchuk has been the Director of Athletics, Navy has added six varsity sports to give Navy 36 varsity sports teams, tied with Stanford and Ohio State for the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Judge clears path for $100 million City Dock overhaul in Annapolis
An Anne Arundel County judge has ruled that Annapolis can proceed with its $100 million City Dock Resiliency Project, dismissing claims that the city's Historic Preservation Commission violated local law when approving the plans. Circuit Judge Michael Malone issued the decision, siding with the commission and rejecting a lawsuit filed on behalf of an anonymous plaintiff. The plaintiff had alleged that the commission's approval process did not comply with city regulations. With the ruling in its favor, Annapolis is now poised to move ahead with the long-awaited redevelopment of City Dock. The project aims to raise the dock's elevation, enhance flood resilience, and add community amenities, including a park and visitors' center.

Who could be the Naval Academy's next athletic director? Here's a list of candidates

Chet Gladchuk announced his pending retirement as Navy athletic director on Monday morning.

Gladchuk led the Naval Academy Athletic Association for 24 years, making him the longest-tenured athletic director in the institution's history.

There will likely be a long list of candidates to succeed Gladchuk for a job that is very attractive in this era of college athletics. At Navy, the athletic director does not need to worry about name, image and likeness, revenue sharing with athletes and collectives.

Here are some of the potential candidates for the Navy athletic director position:

Gene Taylor, Kansas State athletic director

Taylor is in his ninth season at Kansas State, which is a member of the Big 12 Conference. He recently agreed to a contract extension through the 2029-30 school year that includes a $925,000 annual salary and retention bonuses.

It is unclear whether the Naval Academy could afford Taylor and he certainly would be considered a dream candidate. Taylor began his career in athletic administration at the Naval Academy and still has great fondness for Annapolis and the institution.

Taylor was initially hired by athletic director James “Bo” Coppedge as an assistant ticket manager and steadily climbed the ladder of the Navy athletic department during his 15 years in Annapolis. Jack Lengyel replaced Coppedge as Navy athletic director and became an important mentor to Taylor.

Lengyel saw great potential in Taylor and promoted him to senior associate athletic director for internal operations. Taylor ultimately left Navy to become athletic director at North Dakota State, spending 13 years at the Football Championship Subdivision school. He served briefly as deputy athletic director at Iowa before taking the Kansas State post.

During his early days in Annapolis, Taylor was roommates with former Navy water polo coach Mike Schofield. He wound up marrying Schofield's sister Cathy. In 2019, when Navy played Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl, Taylor talked about his enduring love for the Naval Academy.

“It was a great time to be at the Naval Academy. I was there when the staff consisted of a lot of young, single guys and we had a ton of fun,” Taylor said. “We'd work various athletic events then head to Riordan's. During summers, we'd go boating on the Chesapeake Bay. I loved Annapolis and I loved the Naval Academy — still do on both counts.”

Jennifer Baker, Johns Hopkins athletic director

Baker is in her seventh season as associate vice provost for student affairs and director of athletics and recreation at Johns Hopkins. She was raised in Lutherville and Monkton and graduated from Hereford High.

Baker is a 1998 Naval Academy graduate. She was a member of the Navy women's lacrosse team when it was club status and earned a degree in aerospace engineering.

Baker served as a Navy pilot assigned to the FA-18 squadron and as a civil engineer corps officer. She retired from the U.S. Navy after seven years and earned a master's in business administration from Cornell.

Baker began her career in athletic administration at Cornell, ultimately ascending to associate director of athletics and facilities. She served as senior manager of corporate real estate, facilities and operations for Under Armour before taking the Hopkins post.

During Baker's tenure, Johns Hopkins has captured five team national championships, 16 individual national championships and 53 conference championships. The Blue Jays have also produced16 NCAA postgraduate scholarship recipients, 292 All-Americans and 102 Academic All-Americans.

Sean Magee, Michigan football general manager

Magee is a rising star in the world of college athletics and currently holds the title of senior associate athletic director and general manager for the Michigan football program. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the recruiting and player personnel departments, as well as coordinating the NIL initiatives for the Wolverines.

Magee is a 2004 graduate of the Naval Academy, a three-year letterman as an offensive lineman. He was the starting tackle for the 2003 squad that went 8-5 and earned a berth in the Houston Bowl.

Magee began his career in athletic administration as director of player personnel for Navy football under former head coach Ken Niumatalolo. He managed all administrative operations while also developing and implementing strategic planning, marketing and scouting.

Magee left Navy to become associate athletic director for football at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. From 2017 to 2021, he was charged with directing all off-field areas, including the management of the player personnel department, football operations and budget administration.

Magee spent two seasons in the NFL as chief of staff for the Chicago Bears.

Bob Beretta, St. Bonaventure athletic director

Beretta is in his first year as vice president and director of athletics at St. Bonaventure, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. He previously spent four years as athletic director at LeMoyne College, overseeing the New York school's transition from Division II to Division I as a member of the Northeast Conference.

Beretta is very familiar with service academy athletics, having worked for 34 years at Army West Point. He initially served as sports information director before being promoted senior athletic director for strategic initiatives.

Eric Ruden, Navy deputy director of athletics

Ruden is in his 24th year with the Navy athletic department and is responsible for external relations, which covers a wide variety of duties. Ruden manages the Navy Radio Network and is heavily involved with the execution of the Army-Navy Game.

Ruden works closely with the organizing authority for whichever city hosts the Army-Navy Game, be it the Philadelphia Sports Congress or Baltimore Ravens.

Ruden was hired at Navy in July 1996 after spending five years as sports information and marketing director at Indiana State University. He is a 1986 graduate of Indiana University and began his career in college athletics as assistant sports information director at his alma mater.

Robb Dunn, Navy deputy director of athletics/administration

Dunn joined the Navy athletic department in September 2007 and currently oversees the academy's competitive intercollegiate club sports program. He is the sports administrator for football along with men's and women's golf.

Dunn oversees football administration, operations and budget, including scheduling, team travel and participation in neutral site or postseason games. He also supports outgoing athletic director Gladchuk in strategic initiatives and special projects.
