TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY

1914 - A U.S. Navy boat party consisting of an officer and eight bluejackets was detained for half an hour while taking on a supply of gasoline at Tampico, Mexico. The following day,Rear Admiral Henry T. Mayo, Class of 1876, the commander of the Atlantic Fleet's Fourth Division operating in the waters off Mexico, demanded the firing of a 21-gun salute and a formal apology for the unlawful seizure. On 11 April, Mexican President Victoriano Huerta issued a formal apology, but refused to fire the salute, which enraged U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. The escalation ultimately led to the U.S. naval and military occupation of Veracruz, Mexico.

1972 - CAPT Scott Ketchie '69, USMC was killed in action when the A-6A Intruder he was copiloting was shot down in southern Laos. He was flying from USS Coral Sea (CV 43) as a member of Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA(AW)) 224. He was survived by his wife.

No. 1 U.S. Tennis Star - and USNA alum - served in the Navy during World War II
A man in business attire hands a man wearing athletic attire and holding tennis rackets a trophy. Another man wearing athletic attire and holding tennis rackets looks on. Navy Lt. Joe Hunt '42won the 1943 U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York City while on leave from the Navy in early September of that year. He is the only man in history to win the U.S. national boys' (then 15-and-under), juniors' (18-and-under), collegiate and U.S. men's singles titles.  Hunt also played football at the U.S. Naval Academy, winning a game ball in the 1941 Army-Navy game after beating Army 14-6 in Philadelphia, Nov. 29, 1941. Eight days later, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Due to wartime needs, Hunt's class graduated early on Dec. 19, 1941, instead of in the spring of 1942.

AFA Arctic research examines impact on operational readiness
As global interest in the Arctic escalates, the U.S. military prioritizes warfighter preparedness for one of the world's most extreme environments. U.S. Air Force Academy warrior scholars are at the forefront of research to help ensure operational readiness and mission success in the region. Ten cadets and 12 Canadian academics representing the North American and Arctic Defense and Security Network participated in an Arctic immersion designed to deepen understanding of homeland defense from a northern perspective. “Before taking this class, I never gave a second thought about the Arctic,” said Cadet 2nd Class Anna Bardorf, a behavioral sciences and leadership major. “The impact of climate change is making the Arctic a prevalent future threat as potential adversaries find the area more navigable with the melting ice. It is important for our warfighters to understand this reality before it becomes an even larger threat to our national security.”

NCAA Sports settlement nears finalization amid judge's last concerns
A multibillion-dollar legal settlement with the potential to reshape the business of college sports inched closer to its fast-approaching finish line during a federal court hearing Monday. Judge Claudia Wilken declined to provide final approval of a deal between the NCAA and plaintiff attorneys representing past, present and future Division I athletes, but she directed lawyers to address a short list of her remaining concerns within one week. The NCAA has agreed to pay roughly $2.8 billion in damages to past and current athletes to settle three federal antitrust lawsuits that claim the association's rules have limited the athletes' earning potential in various ways. The deal also would create a new system for schools to pay players directly, starting this summer. In exchange, the NCAA will be allowed to limit how much each school can spend on its athletes per year -- an effective salary cap that is expected to start at roughly $20.5 million per school and increase annually during the 10-year lifespan of the deal.
