and USNA Memorial Hall History

1801 - Captain Thomas Truxtun turned over command of the frigate President to Captain Richard Dale at Hampton Roads, Virginia, writing that it was “the finest frigate that ever floated on the waters of this globe.” Truxtun, a hero of the American Revolution and the Quasi-War with France, never commanded a ship at sea again and tendered his resignation from the U.S. Navy on 3 March 1802.

1912 - First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham, the first Marine officer to be assigned to "duty in connection with aviation" by Major General Commandant William P. Biddle, reported for aviation training at the Naval Aviation Camp at Annapolis, Maryland, and Marine aviation had its official beginning.

1983 - LTjg Patrick Inglis '80, USN was lost when the A-6E Intruder he was piloting stalled at a low altitude and crashed near a Soviet aircraft carrier. He was attached to Attack Squadron (VA) 65 operating from USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. His bombardier/navigator, LCDR John Austin, was also killed. He was survived by his wife, parents, two brothers, and three sisters.

Boston Red Sox orospect Noah Song makes long-awaited return from Tommy John surgery
The Boston Red Sox got a dose of good news from Sarasota County on Tuesday. Noah Song '19 took the mound in the Florida Complex League, drawing the start against the Baltimore Orioles' rookie squad. It marked the righty's first professional appearance since 2023, as he missed all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery. In 2.0 innings of action, Song allowed zero runs, zero hits and one walk with four strikeouts. That set the stage for the Red Sox to eventually snag a 9-8 win. Song, 27, was Boston's fourth round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. The Naval Academy graduate got a taste of minor league action that summer, but ultimately could not get his active service time delayed.

On May 16, 2025, the Defense Department released to Congress the results of the 2024 Active-Duty Spouse Survey, a look at the opinions and attitudes of active-duty military spouses conducted roughly every two years. Survey participants are drawn from a representative sample and results are weighted for the entire active-duty spouse population, so findings are generalizable.  The survey covers a range of topics including the availability of child care, spouse employment, family finances, availability of services, challenges posed by permanent change of station moves and overall satisfaction with the military lifestyle.

World-renowned Blue Angels take practice flight over Annapolis
The world-famous Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy's elite flight demonstration squadron roared through the skies over Annapolis on Tuesday for a thrilling practice session ahead of their upcoming performances for the Naval Academy's Commissioning Week. There's nothing quite like the sound of the Blue Angels' F/A-18 Super Hornets roaring up the Severn River. Greg Thrasher recently moved to Annapolis and got to experience the Blue Angels for the first time. "I had never heard that kind of noise before coming out of the sky," Thrasher said.
