1963 - LCDR Norris Tollefson '51, USN and LTjg Richard Farrington '59, USN were lost when the S2F Tracer they were co-piloting crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. Norris was survived by his wife, son, three-week-old daughter, and his parents. Richard had left the Naval Academy at the end of his 2/c year; it appears he entered the fleet as an enlisted sailor. He was survived by his fiancé, to whom he was to marry on May 29th, and his parents.

ACADEMY & GRADUATE HAPPENINGS

This Memorial Day, Run To Honor continued its powerful annual tradition: the reading of all 2,567 names of Naval Academy alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. This year's tribute was especially meaningful as it brought together not only members of Run To Honor, but also alumni and teammates from the Alumni Association and Foundation. Together, we all stood in remembrance—reading each name aloud in the Fluegel Alumni Center against a backdrop that was built to mimic Memorial Hall. We honored those who “proved their love of country and their loyalty to the high traditions of their alma mater by inscribing with their own blood the narrative of their deeds above, on, and underneath the seven seas.”

The USNA Virtual Memorial Hall exists to perpetuate the memory of alumni of the United States Naval Academy who have died in service to their country. As President Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address, "It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion."

GOVERNMENT & MILITARY NEWS

Each year on the last Monday in May, the Defense Department joins the nation in honoring service members who lost their lives in defense of the nation, and mourns with their families. Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is an annual day of remembrance to honor all those who died in service to the U.S. during peacetime and war. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers place American flags on graves at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time.

May 26 @ 0800-1000: USNA Cemetery by LCDR Erik Kristensen grave site - Shannon Webb '04 is the POC. We'll meet at Erik Kristensen's grave site, colors at 0800, share a little bit about who we are and why we came, walk/ run around Hospital Point and then come together for some refreshments.
