Friday, May 30, 2025Today in Navy, Marine Corps and USNA Memorial Hall History 1861 - Confederate forces raised the steam frigate Merrimack, previously scuttled and burned by Union forces as they abandoned the Norfolk Navy Yard. On 10 June, Lieutenant John Mercer Brooke received orders to design an ironclad using the machinery and underwater hull of Merrimack. Work began on the vessel on 23 June.
