1942 - The Battle of Midway opened on 3 June when a PBY Catalina patrol plane spotted the Japanese force carrying troops for the invasion of Midway Atoll.

1985 - LCDR Gregory Lane '72, USN was lost on June 3, 1985 when the A-7 Corsair II he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida. He was a member of Attack Squadron (VA) 83. A native of Cairo, Georgia, he was survived by his wife, parents, sister, brother, and maternal grandparents.

Truman Strike Group returns from 8-month deployment
The flagship of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group returned to its homeport of Norfolk, Virginia on June 1, following an eight-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operations. The strike group, which departed for deployment in September 2024, consisted of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64), Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Stout (DDG 55) and USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 28, and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 with nine embarked squadrons. While sailing across Europe and the Middle East, the strike group conducted a wide range of missions, including exercises with NATO Allies and combat operations in the Red Sea.

Air Force Academy Dean of Faculty retires as controversial civilian faculty cuts loom
The Air Force Academy Dean of Faculty, Brigadier General Linell A. Letendre, retired last week following the Academy's Class of 2025 graduation ceremony. Her retirement has been expected–at least in Air Force Academy (USAFA) circles–since the start of the year; but it comes at a time of uncertainty at the military institution as large-scale civilian faculty cuts loom on the horizon, according to multiple reports by KOAA and our news partners at the Gazette.USAFA Superintendent Tony Bauernfeind reportedly informed staff in early April that the institution was planning to cut about 100 civilian faculty members ahead of the Fall 2025 semester.

Navy Memorial Concerts on the Avenue

Join us on select Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM this summer to hear the world-renowned U.S. Navy Band perform its Concerts on the Avenue series. Enjoy warm weather, live music, and an unparalleled backdrop on Navy Memorial Plaza. In the case of inclement weather, Navy Band concerts will be replaced with a performance by the Sea Chanters inside the Navy Memorial theater, and the ensemble concerts will be canceled.
