1916 - LTjg Richard Saufley '08, USN was lost when the seaplane he was piloting crashed near Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. He was attempting to set a new endurance record for seaplanes. He was Naval Aviator No. 14, and an observer on the first aircraft ever used in combat. His namesakes are USS Saufley (DD 465) and Saufley Field, Florida. He was survived by his wife.

1944 - The submarine Harder (SS-257) completed four days of operations in the vicinity of the Japanese fleet anchorage at Tawi Tawi, Philippines, during which it sank three enemy destroyers, survived a determined depth charge attack, and evacuated coast watchers from the nearby island of Borneo. The boat's skipper, Commander Samuel D. Dealey '30, received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his actions during this time period.

1945 - Task Group 17.21, a submarine attack group commanded by Commander Earl T. Hydeman '32, operated against Japanese shipping in the Sea of Japan, sinking 33 vessels in 15 days.

USNA Alumni Association and Foundation Travel Program excerpt
From EVP of Engagement and Comms, TJ Grady '96, who is the AA&F host for the Travel Program's “Easy Company” trip in Europe: “Spent the anniversary of D-Day, 6 June, with 13 alumni and their families in Normandy honoring the men and women who gave their lives on that fateful day.  We visited Point du Hoc, Omaha Beach, and the American Military Cemetery overlooking where the 29th and 1st Divisions landed 81 years earlier. Bill Bina '69 and his son laid a wreath at the wall of the missing in honor of his uncle who was part of the invasion but went missing that day. The tour, which follows Easy Company, the unit that inspired the book and TV series Band of Brothers, began in Aldbourne, England where we visited Easy's temporary training home before the invasion. We then spent four days in Normandy visiting the different battlefields. We are now headed to the Netherlands where we'll visit Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem, the location of Easy's 2nd airborne drop during Operation Market Garden. Next we visit Bastogne, then Munich.

Naval Academy grad talks journey through school following his mother's murder
After a storm comes a rainbow and that couldn't be more true for Trey Cummings. Thousands of people watched as he graduated from the Naval Academy, but the one person he wished could've been there was tragically ripped from his life and had to watch from above. "I have little goals here and there, but I feel like this goal is probably one of the biggest goals I've ever accomplished," Trey said. He felt on top of the world graduating from the Naval Academy last month.

Top cyber execs to watch in 2025: ManTech's Chris Cleary '96
Chris Cleary led the development of ManTech's cyber strategy centered on the principles of ”Deter, Defend, Dominate.” This framework aligns with Defense Department and U.S. Cyber Command priorities by emphasizing a proactive posture that denies adversary objectives, defends critical infrastructure and dominates the cyber domain. It's a strategy built for speed, resilience and mission assurance in contested environments. “In today's fight, dominance doesn't just come from firepower,” Cleary said. “It comes from the ability to deter, defend and dominate in cyberspace with speed, precision and purpose.”

Judge OK's $2.8B settlement, paving way for colleges to pay athletes
Schools are now free to begin paying their athletes directly, marking the dawn of a new era in college sports brought about by a multibillion-dollar legal settlement that was formally approved Friday. Judge Claudia Wilken approved the deal between the NCAA, its most powerful conferences and lawyers representing all Division I athletes. The House v. NCAA settlement ends three separate federal antitrust lawsuits, all of which claimed the NCAA was illegally limiting the earning power of college athletes. Wilken's long-awaited decision comes with less than a month remaining before schools are planning to start cutting checks to athletes on July 1.

Navy Football's stock in American Athletic Conference title race rises
It seems everyone is high on Navy Midshipmen football these days. The Midshipmen are getting ready to play two games on national television on CBS. Ten of their 12 games are already slotted for a TV channel, with two more on the way. Quarterback Blake Horvath is back and could be a dark horse Heisman Trophy contender. Lindy's Sports, one of the top college football publications on newsstands, weighed in on the state of the American Athletic Conference with the release of its preview. Where Did Lindy's Sports Pick Navy in the AAC? The magazine had Navy No. 1 overall, meaning the Midshipmen would host the AAC title game in early December against Tulane, which it picked second.
