1945 - A kamikaze near misses the destroyer William D. Porter (DD-579) off Okinawa, Japan, causing it to burn fiercely. In command of the nearby large support landing craft LCS (L)-I22, Lieutenant Richard M. McCool, Jr., Class of 1945, places his vessel alongside the stricken destroyer to take off members of its crew before the destroyer sinks. The following day, when a suicide plane crashes into his ship, McCool is wounded, but musters the strength to personally free men trapped in a compartment. For his heroic actions on these two days, McCool is awarded the Medal of Honor.

1965 - LTjg Carl Doughtie '63, USN was killed in action when his A-1 Skyraider was shot down over North Vietnam while on an attack mission. It was his tenth combat mission; he was flying with Attack Squadron (VA) 25 from USS Midway (CV 41). Carl was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. For more than 32 years, he was officially listed as missing in action. His remains were identified in 1998, however, and he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in 1999. He was survived by his parents.

The history and legacy of Camp Mitchell: A pillar of Seabee excellence in Rota, Spain
Nestled within Naval Station Rota, Spain, Camp Mitchell stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment and operational excellence of the U.S. Navy Seabees. Named in honor of Capt. Thomas J. Mitchell '53, a distinguished Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) officer who was killed in action in 1974, the camp has served as a forward-deployed hub for Naval Construction Forces in the European and African theaters for decades. The history of Camp Mitchell dates back to the early years of the Cold War, when the United States and its NATO allies sought to strengthen their presence in Europe. With the establishment of Naval Station Rota in 1953, the strategic location of southern Spain provided the U.S. Navy with a critical gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. At a ceremony on July 23, 1982, Chief Civil Engineer of the Navy Rear Adm. William M. Zobel officially named Camp Mitchell in honor of Capt. Thomas J. Mitchell, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate of 1953.

Meet Lionsbridge FC - A USNA alumni owned football club
On Sunday, June 8th, 2025, the Annapolis Blues soccer football team played Lionsbridge FC in Navy/Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and won 2-0.  This is not the first time that one of Lionsbridge FC's owners had attended a game in that stadium.  Kevin Joyce '03 - a Naval Academy graduate - is part owner of Lionsbridge. Since its founding in 2017, Lionsbridge Football Club has rapidly become a cornerstone of the Newport News/Norfolk peninsula sporting community; and, it is a rising force in US lower-division soccer. Founded by local entrepreneurs Joyce '03 and Mike Vest, Lionsbridge FC was built on the vision of bringing high-quality, community-focused soccer to the Hampton Roads area. Named after the iconic Lion's Bridge in Newport News, the club has matched its symbolic roots with real-world impact both on and off the field.

Government & Military News

700 Marines deploying to downtown Los Angeles
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is sending a battalion of Marines to downtown Los Angeles to join National Guard troops supporting federal agencies amid protests against the Trump administration's immigration raids. U.S. Northern Command confirmed in a Monday evening statement to USNI News that the 2nd Battallion, 7th Marines will head west from Twentynine Palms in Southern California to the state's largest city. “Approximately 700 Marines with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division will seamlessly integrate with the Title 10 forces under Task Force 51 who are protecting federal personnel and federal property in the greater Los Angeles area,” reads the statement from the Colorado-based combatant command.

What Marines deploying to LA amid protests legally can, and cannot, do
Roughly 700 Marines have been ordered to deploy to Los Angeles to protect federal buildings and officials amid mounting immigration protests there,  U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, announced on Monday. Generally speaking, Marine infantry units focus on lethal force as opposed to less-than-lethal force, so they are typically not trained or equipped to deal with civil disturbances, said retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, who led military relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “In this particular mission, they could supplement the Guard or work with them in the mission of protecting federal property and people,” Honoré told Task & Purpose on Monday.

USS Marinette (LCS 25) Change of Command
Cmdr. Ryan Miller relieved Cmdr. Janet Broome '06 as USS Marinette (LCS 25) Commanding Officer, during a change of command ceremony at Naval Station Mayport, June 09. Broome and her crew also took Marinette to Annapolis, MD earlier this year to be present for the Naval Academy's Ship Selection Night. Throughout the course of her tenure her crew facilitated over 5,000 visitors, significantly increasing the public's awareness and knowledge of both the Navy's Surface Community and the Littoral Combat Ship program. “It is unbelievable that I had the honor and privilege to lead such an amazing crew,” said Broome. “This crew has shown real strength, resiliency, tenacity, and perseverance, accomplishing every task they were assigned.” Cmdr. Broome will report to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, for her next duty station.
