TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY

1918 - BGen James G. Harbord, the Commanding General of the 4th Marine Brigade, notified American Expeditionary Force Headquarters that Belleau Wood was "now U.S. Marine Corps entirely." After 20 days of combat, and at a cost of over 4,000 casualties, the 4th Brigade of Marines had proven its fighting heart. The grateful Commander of the French Sixth Army would soon decree that in all official correspondence, Belleau Wood would henceforth bear the name, "Bois de la Brigade de Marine."

1993 - In response to an assassination plot on former President George H.W. Bush during a visit to Kuwait, the destroyer Peterson (DD-969) and the guided missile cruiser Chancellorsville (CG-62) launch 23 Tomahawk cruise missiles against the Iraqi Intelligence Service headquarters in Baghdad.

2006 - 1LT Brian R.S.J. Deforge '03, USMC was lost when the F/A-18C Hornet he was piloting collided with another over Monterey County, California. He was a member of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125. Brian was a native of Plattsburgh, New York, and was survived by his wife, two children, mother, father, step-mother, step-father, and five brothers.

Athletic & Scholarship Programs (A&SP) Event at the Fluegel Alumni Center (FAC)
The Fluegel Alumni Center was filled with energy and anticipation as 44 students from the United States Naval Academy (USNA) Class of 2029 and their families gathered for an ice cream social hosted by the USNA Alumni Association and Foundation (USNA AA&F) in honor of our Athletic and Scholarship Program (A&SP) students. The event offered incoming Plebes a chance to meet classmates, connect with mentors and Yard leaders, and gave parents the opportunity to build their Blue and Gold communities with one another. USNA AA&F President and CEO Jeff Webb '95 noted the event also served as an introduction to the resources and support network A&SP provides throughout the Naval Academy journey. Guests were welcomed by many alumni and leaders including USNA Superintendent VADM Yvette Davids '89, USN, Commandant of Midshipmen Capt Gilbert E. Clark Jr. '98, USN, A&SP Chairman ADM Bill Moran '81, USN (Ret.), several A&SP Board members and USNA AA&F leaders. It was a joyful first gathering in Annapolis, full of nervous excitement, warm introductions and helpful advice as these future leaders took their first steps on the path to becoming Naval officers and serving our Navy and Marine Corps.

Senators concerned with Navy shipbuilding delays, budget
The Navy remains years behind in projected ship deliveries and cannot provide firm timelines for improvement, military officials told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense on Tuesday. The hearing saw testimony from Navy Secretary John Phelan, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Eric Smith and Navy Adm. James Kilby '86, acting chief of naval operations. Kilby told lawmakers that the Navy is “laser-focused on China as our most consequential opponent” and noted the service has set an “ambitious goal to make 80% of our ships, submarines and aircraft combat surge-ready by 1 January 2027.”
