Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1950 - Signaling the intensification of the air war over Korea, aircraft from the carriers Valley Forge (CV-45) and Philippine Sea (CV-47) set new records for operations, completing 202 sorties in one day in the Pyongyang, North Korea, area.

1968 - PFC James Anderson, Jr., was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by Secretary of the Navy, Paul R. Ignatius, for heroism in Vietnam while serving as a rifleman with Company F, 2d Battalion, 3d Marines in February 1967. This was the first Medal of Honor presented to an African-American Marine. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson, Sr., received the award during ceremonies at Marine Barracks, 8th and I.

2003 - LT Kylan Jones-Huffman '94, USNR was killed in action near Hillah, Iraq, by Iraqi insurgents while serving as an intelligence officer with I Marine Expeditionary Force. He was the first mobilized reservist to be killed in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Fluent in Arabic, Farsi, French, and German, Kylan had also earned a master's degree in history from the University of Maryland. Following surface warfare tours in a Frigate and Mine Countermeasures Ship, he taught history at the Naval Academy for about two years. He worked for a year with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; his first day of work was September 11, 2001. He had been accepted to a doctorate program at George Washington University, but had not yet started. Kylan was survived by his wife.

U.S. Naval Academy Foundation and Naval Academy Athletic Association announce $10 million commitment from Bruce '67 and Bernadine Lakefield
The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (USNA AA&F) and the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) are proud to announce a landmark $10 million commitment from Bruce R. Lakefield '67 and his wife, Bernadine, in support of the continued development of Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Lakefields' generous gift will fund the design, construction, and long-term operation of a new pavilion in the stadium's north end zone. The Bruce and Bernadine Lakefield Pavilion will be a flagship feature of Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and the largest special event space in Anne Arundel County. Designed to serve both the Naval Academy and Annapolis community, it will host events including reunions, U.S. Naval Academy Brigade functions, and gameday hospitality. More than just a venue, the facility will stand as a testament to the Naval Academy's enduring commitment to strengthening the Physical Mission and investing in spaces that inspire excellence.

Alumni Association & Foundation Parent Giving Program
Parent Giving - For generations, the United States Naval Academy has prepared young men and women to lead with honor, courage, and commitment. This legacy is strengthened every day by those who believe in the power of leadership, service, and shared purpose, including the parents of today's Brigade. Federal funds provide a baseline, but they do not cover the full cost of a 21st century Naval Academy education. Private philanthropy fuels the Margin of Excellence, including the programs and experiences that set our midshipmen apart. From leadership development and academic enrichment to varsity athletics and international study, your support makes the difference. Your generosity enhances your own midshipman's experience while shaping opportunities for the entire Brigade.

Calling all families of Classes of '40, '41 and '42
Craig Symonds (Professor Emeritus) invites all friends and family members of the Naval Academy class of 1940, 1941, and 1942 to attend a reception to celebrate the publication of Annapolis Goes to War: The Naval Academy Class of 1940 and Its Trial By Fire in World War II. The reception will be in Fluegel Hall at the Academy on September 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. Please RSVP to Craig at [email protected]. America's preeminent naval historian offers a history of the Second World War based on the experiences of the young officers - fresh out of the United States Naval Academy - who served on its front lines. They arrived in Annapolis as teenagers the year Hitler re-occupied the Rhineland and graduated as young men the week the British Army evacuated Dunkirk. Annapolis Goes to War tells the story of their four transformative years at the Naval Academy, and then four more annealing years in the cauldron of war.
