WWII Hero - and USNA Alum - Honored at U.S. Open Tennis Championships
The U.S. Tennis Association hosted the 2025 Lt. Joe Hunt Military Appreciation Day yesterday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, in Queens, New York. Several speakers at the event paid tribute to Hunt. More than a tennis player, Hunt was the U.S. Nationals champion, an NCAA champion, a Naval Academy graduate and a Navy football star. Like so many of his generation, he put aside his personal achievement to answer his nation's call, said Navy Rear Adm. Michael Boyle, director of the Navy staff.  After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Hunt "traded aces on the court for the challenge of becoming an ace in the sky, earning his wings of gold as a naval aviator," he said.

GOVERNMENT & MILITARY NEWS

China is showing off its weaponry in a tightly controlled military parade
China's missiles, fighter jets and other military hardware — some on public view for the first time — are being displayed in a major parade Wednesday in the nation's capital. Troops will march in lockstep by President Xi Jinping, who leads the long-ruling Communist Party and heads the military as the chairman of the Central Military Commission. Xi will deliver a speech at the event, which marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The audience includes about two dozen foreign leaders from countries seeking to improve or maintain relations with the government in Beijing. Much of the weaponry and equipment in the parade is being shown to the public for the first time, Chinese military officials have said.

Scammers present 'persistent threat' to troops, veterans, expert warns
When it comes to financial matters, retired Navy Rear Adm. Brian E. Luther is more savvy than many people. But even Luther — the president and CEO of Navy Mutual — nearly got scammed, exemplifying just how sophisticated financial scammers have become. Since he took the leadership role at Navy Mutual in 2020, his family has been targeted by scammers about every other year. Navy Mutual regularly warns their military community members about the latest scams as part of their efforts to help military families safeguard their financial futures. According to the Federal Trade Commission, military consumers reported losing $584 million to fraud in 2024.

Meet the Fall Semester Brigade Commander - MIDN Kellen Bynes
Each academic semester, the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) selects a new midshipman to lead the Brigade of Midshipmen. For the fall 2025 semester, Midshipman 1st Class Kellen Bynes has been selected to serve in this distinguished role as the highest-ranking midshipman in the Brigade. Leading more than 4,400 midshipmen, the brigade commander is responsible for maintaining the highest state of readiness and professionalism, ensuring brigade efficiency, addressing deficiencies to the Commandant of Midshipmen, and, when necessary, recommending corrective action, as outlined in USNA instruction. A native of San Diego, Bynes grew up in a city often associated with Navy presence. Even so, without any direct family previously serving, a military academy wasn't on his radar.

Profs and Pints: Those who gave rise to our Navy
On September 9th, a month ahead of the planned celebration of the U.S. Navy's 250th anniversary, Profs and Pints Annapolis will stage the perfect talk to get you ready for that event: A look at the sailors who first climbed aboard ships to fight for our nation. Professor Abby Mullen, who teaches courses on naval history at the United States Naval Academy, will speak in depth at the Graduate by Hilton Annapolis about the backgrounds of the patriots who fought the American Revolution at sea. You'll learn how they hailed from a wide variety of backgrounds and took tremendous risks just in signing up, with execution for treason being among their potential fates. It's a lecture that will give you a newfound appreciation for the courage exhibited by those who risked everything on land and at sea to secure our nation's independence from Great Britain. Tickets must be purchased online with processing fees and sales tax added. Advance tickets: $13.50. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Doors open at 4 pm and the talk starts at 5:30 pm.
