Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1943 -  Commodore James Logan, Class of 1910, USN was lost when the aircraft he was aboard crashed in Northern Ireland; he was en route to London for a meeting with the Commander of US Naval Forces in Europe. He was the commandant of the Naval Operating Base, Londonderry, and oversaw all US Navy activities in Northern Ireland. As was standard at the time, he was a Midshipman until commissioning two years after graduation; he served primarily in battleships as a junior officer. For the first half of the 1920s he was ashore at the Naval War College and Navy Department, and then in command of a destroyer 1926-1929. He then reported to the Naval Academy, staying there until becoming navigator and then 1st Lieutenant of USS West Virginia (BB 48) in 1932. He returned to the Naval Academy as the executive officer of the post-graduate school from 1934-1937, was briefly commanding officer of Destroyer Division 4, and then commanding officer of USS Cincinnati (CL 6). He was back at the Naval Academy as head of the post-graduate school from 1939 until roughly December 1942 when he went to Europe. James was survived by his wife and son.

1969 - Captain James B. Stockdale '47, having already been subjected to extreme torture and deprivation during his captivity in North Vietnam, is caught attempting to communicate covertly with fellow prisoners. Rather than submit to the North Vietnamese, he attempts to commit suicide as a symbol of his defiance, prompting his captors to revive him and abate their torture. For his actions Stockdale receives the Medal of Honor.

Trump announces that Space Command is moving from Colorado to Alabama
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that U.S. Space Command will be located in Alabama, reversing a Biden-era decision to keep it at its temporary headquarters in Colorado. The long-expected decision from Trump caps a four-year tug of war between two states and opposing administrations about where to locate U.S. Space Command, an intense fight because the headquarters would be a significant boon to the local economy. Alabama and Colorado have long battled to claim Space Command, with elected officials from both states asserting their state is the better location.

Rubio says US military strikes on drug smugglers 'will happen again'
President Donald Trump on Wednesday justified the lethal military strike that his administration said was carried out a day earlier against a Venezuelan gang as a necessary effort by the United States to send an unmistakable message to Latin American cartels. Asked why the military did not instead interdict the vessel and capture those on board, Trump said the operation would cause drug smugglers to think twice about trying to move drugs into the U.S. “There was massive amounts of drugs coming into our country to kill a lot of people, and everybody fully understands that,” Trump said while hosting Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the White House.
