Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1942 - ENS Henry Becker '43, USNR was lost when the SBD Dauntless dive bomber he was piloting crashed near Coronado, California. He had resigned from the Naval Academy due to academic difficulties in 1940 (after first semester plebe year); he re-entered the service sometime before May 1942. He was a native of Mingo Junction, Ohio, where a painted portrait of him still hangs in the City Building. Henry was survived by his parents.

1956 - Eleven Marines from the 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division, stationed near Naha, Okinawa, drowned while swimming, from an undercurrent caused by Typhoon Emma. The violent storm, with 140 mph winds, struck the Philippine Islands, Okinawa, Korea, and Japan, causing some 55 deaths and millions of dollars in property damage.

DC Chapter hosts USNA information session for prospective candidates at the Navy Memorial
Applying to the US Naval Academy from the DC area is highly competitive due to its proximity to Annapolis as well as our top-notch local school systems, presenting a unique set of challenges to those interested in attending the US Naval Academy. This session will provide prospective applicants, as well as parents and counselors, with the information they need to successfully navigate the admissions and nomination process - which is very different from the Common Application used at most colleges and universities throughout the United States. The Greater DC Chapter of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association serves our community by providing support to prospective applicants to the U.S. Naval Academy by hosting information sessions to help prospective applicants decide if the U.S. Naval Academy is the right school for them, hosting candidate acceptance events to celebrate those that have been awarded admission to the Naval Academy, and supporting candidates wishing to attend Summer Seminar. We hope you will join us on 8 Oct, 7 -8:15 p.m. EDT at the Navy Memorial in downtown DC.
