Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1950 - CDR Raymond Vogel, Jr. '36, USN was killed in action when the F4U-4B Corsair he was piloting was shot down near Seoul, South Korea. He was commanding officer of Air Group 11, flying from USS Philippine Sea (CV 47). After a first tour in USS Arizona (BB 39), he earned his wings in June 1939. He was a member of Fighting Squadron 3 for a year and a half before returning for instructor duty. He was active in the Pacific war, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with seven gold stars until he was wounded in August 1943. He had returned to the action by late 1944 as commanding officer of Fighting Squadron 89; he became the Group Commander in early 1946. Staff duties were intermixed with command of Carrier Air Group 31, and then later of Carrier Air Group 11 in February 1950. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Raymond was survived by his wife, three sons (Bill '62, Fred '65, and Tim USMA '65 - who became a Navy pilot), and two daughters.

1994 - Twenty-four Navy ships are involved in landings in Haiti as part of Operation Support Democracy. A unique element of the operation involves the carriers Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) and America (CV-66), which deploy with an array of Army helicopters in place of their normal air wings. Diplomatic efforts help avoid the use of force in restoring a democratic government in Haiti, though American military forces remain in the island nation until 31 March 1995.

Navy decommissioning last ships before fiscal year's end
The Navy is quietly decommissioning ships from the fleet as Fiscal Year 2025 wraps up in less than two weeks. Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship USS Dextrous (MCM 13) decommissioned Sept. 3, followed by USS Gladiator (MCM-11) on Sept. 4, at Manama, Bahrain. The 1980s-era ships are being replaced by Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships outfitted with MCM mission packages. The first, USS Canberra (LCS-30), arrived in Bahrain in May. Dextrous and Gladiator will remain in Bahrain until the other two MCMs based there are decommissioned, Lt. Cmdr. Kai Cumpston, commanding officer of Dextrous, said in a Facebook post.

The Army-Navy game will be honored as the recipient of the 2025 National Football Foundation's Distinguished American Award, the NFF announced on Wednesday in conjunction with the College Hall of Fame. The prestigious award recognizes an outstanding person or entity who has maintained a "lifetime of interest in the game and, over a long period of time, has exhibited enviable leadership qualities and made a significant contribution to the betterment of amateur football in the United States." The Army-Navy game was first played on Nov. 29, 1890, and remains one of college football's oldest and most storied rivalries.
