2006 - After 36 years of service, the Navy retired the F-14 Tomcat in a final flight ceremony at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia. Known for its speed and strike capabilities, the F-14 Tomcat became famous in pop culture for its use in the movie Top Gun.
2013 - LCDR Landon Jones '01, USN was lost when the MH-60 Seahawk helicopter he was piloting was destroyed on the deck of the destroyer USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110) while operating in the Red Sea. A native of Lompoc, California, Landon was remembered as a thrill-seeker who loved fast-moving vehicles from a young age. He was survived by his wife and two sons, one of whom was born after Landon deployed. His wife, in the March 2020 issue of Shipmate, wrote “The Landon I knew was strong and courageous. He was mission-driven and he put everything he had into whatever he was doing. He was a loyal friend and a great teammate. He loved his country and he loved his family. He was my best friend and a wonderful father, despite his limited time, and he will continue to guide our boys through the incredible legacy that he left to our family.”
2014 - In the largest coalition strike at that point in Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation against ISIS, USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) launched 47 Tomahawk cruise missiles against the terrorist group.

USNI Panel Discussion: Beyond Shipyards to Unmanned Systems in the Future Fleet
Tuesday, 30 September 2025 at 3 p.m. Beyond Shipyards to Unmanned Systems in the Future Fleet is the next installation in the U.S. Naval Institute's special four-part event series addressing the Navy's most urgent maritime challenges and examining what it will take to build a fleet capable of meeting modern demands. As the Navy seeks to expand fleet capacity under tight timelines, non-traditional defense firms and tech startups are emerging as key players in the unmanned space. This panel explores how emerging companies are bringing speed, agility, and disruptive innovation to maritime operations, offering alternatives to legacy acquisition cycles and supplementing a strained shipbuilding base. Michael A. Stewart, former Director, Navy Disruptive Capabilities Office, will moderate the discussion with the panelists:
- VADM Michael J. Connor, USN (Ret.), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, ThayerMahan
- CDR Gregory Glaros '86, USN (Ret.), CEO, SYNEXXUS
- Rylan Hamilton, CEO and Co-Founder, Blue Water Autonomy
- Dr. John T. Phillips, Director of Fleet Engagement, NSWC Carderock Division
- Rome Ruiz, Head of Growth and Partnerships, Saab
A networking reception will follow the panel discussion.

Pentagon takes step toward potentially privatizing commissaries
Commissary officials have taken the first step toward the potential privatization of the military grocery stores, seeking input from the commercial grocery industry on whether they could take over the operation of 178 commissaries across the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The Defense Commissary Agency released an official Request for Information, or RFI, on sam.gov, the federal government's contracting site, on Friday. It's a preliminary step before a Request for Proposals could possibly be issued. “The purpose of this RFI is to determine whether commercial grocery operators and investment firms are both interested in and capable of assuming commissary operations, with no government subsidy or with a materially reduced subsidy, while preserving the critical military benefit of a 23.7% average savings for authorized patrons,” commissary officials stated in an announcement Friday.

US lawmakers push for military dialogue in rare China visit
A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers pushed for more military-to-military dialogue in a meeting Sunday with China's Premier Li Qiang, a rare congressional visit since the U.S.-China relations soured. The last trip by a group of senators was in 2023, and Sunday's delegation was the first from the House of Representatives to visit Beijing since 2019. Li welcomed the delegates led by Rep. Adam Smith and called it an “icebreaking trip that will further the ties between the two countries.”

Pentagon to impose new limits on reporters' access, documents show
Media within the Pentagon covering the U.S. military will face new restrictions on the information they are allowed to report or face loss of access to the Pentagon, according to a memo officials distributed to reporters on Friday. Members of the press will be required to sign a document acknowledging they should not disclose either classified or controlled unclassified information that is not formally authorized for publication, says the memo from the Department of Defense, which the Trump administration has renamed the Department of War. It says Pentagon reporters may lose their press credentials for "unauthorized access, attempted unauthorized access, or unauthorized disclosure" of classified information or anything designated as "controlled unclassified information." The memo also says "DoW information must be approved before public release … even if it is unclassified."

Navy Men's Water Polo outlasts Air Force to retain Freedom Vase
The Navy water polo team outlasted rival Air Force, 15-14, on Thursday evening at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis to retain the Freedom Vase for the third consecutive year. The Midshipmen (9-6) lead 10-4, but the Falcons (11-4) made a run, tying the game twice. The Mids were able to regain a late lead and hold on for the one-goal victory. “Tonight was fun,” head coach Luis Nicolao said after the game. “We had a tremendous crowd with a lot of energy in the arena. We were able to jump out to a good lead, but we knew that Air Force would keep fighting. They were able to tie the game, but credit to our guys. We kept fighting; kept battling; and found a way to get it done. I am extremely proud of this team!”
