Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1969 LTjg Kenneth Norton '67, USN was killed in action when the boat (PCF 61) for which he was officer-in-charge was ambushed on the Troung Yang river, South Vietnam. Prior to the Naval Academy he attended Columbian Prep for a year; while there he became known for his devotion to his friends, his fast car, and parachuting. He was survived by his parents.

1975 - President Gerald Ford signed Public Law 94-106 which allowed women to enroll in all U.S. service academies, making them eligible for the first time to attend the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Air Force Academy. This landmark legislation enabled women to join these institutions beginning with the 1976 academic year.

2001 - In response to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, the United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom with air strikes against Taliban and al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan. The first day of strikes included aircraft from the carriers Enterprise (CVAN-65) and Carl Vinson (CVN-70), and 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from surface ships and a submarine.

Celebrating 50 years of women at service academies
Today we celebrate the 50 Year Anniversary of the singing of Public Law 94-106, which opened service academies' admission to women.

On 7 October 1975, when President Ford signed the legislation, our nation marked a pivotal moment that expanded access, opportunity, and excellence and forever strengthened our armed forces.

From the first women of the Class of 1980, through the five decades of USNA Alumnae, to today's graduates - women have commanded ships, led Marines, flown combat missions, driven submarines, served in public office, flown to the moon, and served America with honor, courage and commitment. Their service didn't just change things in Annapolis - it strengthened our Armed Forces across the nation.

Throughout the coming year, in partnership with USNA Women, we will be honoring a half-century of women trailblazers whose achievements proudly represent the Naval Academy's mission of developing leaders to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.

Join us and follow along in the celebration. Share the posts, stories and videos all year long in 2025-2026. Help us honor the legacy of women who made history and the generations who will carry it forward.

Alum assumes command of 5th Fleet
A high-ranking officer who has served more than three decades and has deployed to all Navy theaters of operation worldwide recently took the helm of one of the service's most active combat regions. Vice Adm. Curt Renshaw '90 assumed command of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. 5th Fleet from Vice Adm. George Wikoff on Sunday in a ceremony at U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain. Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, presided over the ceremony, the Navy said in an email Monday. Wikoff took charge of NAVCENT/5th Fleet in February 2024 as attacks on commercial shipping by Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen intensified in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
