1873 - A group of 15 officers assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy met in Annapolis, Maryland, to form a professional society that eventually became the U.S. Naval Institute. The first issue of the United States Naval Institute Proceedings was published in 1875.

Marine Corps updates process to appeal case findings after Hegseth talk
A new Marine Corps policy update allows Marines to submit written appeals in cases of harassment, bullying, hazing and discrimination within 30 days of their case's findings. The policy, released last week following Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's meeting with the military's flag officers and generals in Quantico, Va., also clarifies the grounds for which an appeal can be made. Under the new policy, either party may now appeal the case to the reviewing general court-martial convening authority. Appeals must be written and submitted within 30 days of the notification of the case's finding.

About 100 furloughed Air Force Academy faculty reportedly returning to teach on Wednesday
According to Air Force Academy (USAFA) sources, about 100 furloughed civilian instructors will return to teach on Wednesday. This comes one week after the federal government shutdown amidst a funding fight in Washington between Democrats and Republicans with no end in sight. Since the Oct. 1 shutdown, only military faculty and a handful of non-federal instructors have continued teaching USAFA cadets. According to sources, when possible, this entailed finding larger classrooms to combine multiple sections of cadets if the same class was being offered simultaneously.
