1914 - The collier Jupiter (Collier No. 3) becomes the first U.S. Navy ship to transit the Panama Canal following its formal opening on 1 October. ( Jupiter is converted into Langley (CV-1), the Navy's first aircraft carrier, in 1920.) (10–12 October) 1991 - LCDR Dan Dewispelaere '81, USN was lost when the A-6E Intruder he was piloting crashed near Wenatchee, Washington. He grew up in a military family, and was stationed in various places in the United States as well as Norway; he graduated high school in Alexandria, Virginia. At the Naval Academy Dan played on the Rugby team and is now in the Navy Rugby Hall of Fame. Dan was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V,” almost certainly from the Persian Gulf War, in which he flew in “43 days of combat operations.” He was survived by his wife, two sons, daughter, parents, brother, and sister.

Celebrating 180 Years of the United States Naval Academy
Today, October 10, marks the 180th Founders Day of the United States Naval Academy—an enduring institution that has shaped generations of leaders for our nation's sea services since its founding in 1845.
For 180 years, the Academy's mission has remained constant: to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically, preparing them to serve and lead with honor, courage, and commitment. Nearly 85,000 men and women have completed “four years by the Bay,” earning their commissions and taking their places in the proud lineage of America's naval service.
From its humble beginnings at Fort Severn—a 10-acre Army post in Annapolis, Md.—with just 50 midshipmen and seven professors, the Academy has grown to encompass 338 acres and a Brigade of approximately 4,400 midshipmen supported by 1,600 faculty and staff.
Throughout its storied history, the Naval Academy has produced leaders who have shaped the course of our nation. Names such as Dewey, Halsey, King, Lejeune, Nimitz, Rickover, Spruance, Burke, Brown, Stockdale, Bolden, and Lawrence echo through history as reminders of the Academy's lasting impact on freedom and service.
As America has evolved—technologically, culturally, and strategically—so too has the Naval Academy. What began as a curriculum centered on navigation, gunnery, and steam has become a world-class education in leadership, science, and technology, designed to prepare officers for the complex challenges of the modern fleet.
While much has changed since Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft founded the Naval School in 1845, the Academy's purpose endures. As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and look ahead to the next 180 years of developing leaders who will safeguard our nation and shape its future.

Where do your dollars go?
Ever wonder where philanthropic donations go when you give back to USNA and the Alumni Association & Foundation? Since taking on its current form in 1999, the Naval Academy Foundation has raised approximately $1.4 billion to support academic, athletics, and leadership programs at the Naval Academy. Additionally, unrestricted giving has fueled transformational growth of AA&F programs, operations, and facilities, including the new Fluegel Alumni Center.

Future midshipmen in the making!
This week, the U.S. Navy Memorial hosted the USNAAA–Greater Washington Chapter's (GWC) annual USNA Candidate Info Night, where students and their families joined alumni, faculty and Blue & Gold Officers to learn about the journey to Annapolis. With VADM (Ret) John Nowell Jr. ('84) leading the Navy Memorial, it couldn't be a more fitting venue for the great work by the GWC Team that included Sean O'Connor '83, Ant Calandra '88, Heidi Lenzini '95, Chris Georgi '96, Jill Rough '96, Chip and Kate Murray '00, Luiz Martinez '01 and Ricky Mui '03.

Sports resume for military children after shutdown led to disruption
After-school sports and activities for military children are back on after a government shutdown briefly halted them at bases like Fort Campbell, Fort Knox, and Camp Lejeune. Parents, coaches, and students expressed relief as the Defense Department reversed its earlier decision and classified extracurriculars as “excepted activities.” The pause had disrupted sports seasons and JROTC programs, but the return restores normalcy and much-needed stability for military families.

MD launches loan program for furloughed federal employees
The Maryland Department of Labor on Wednesday launched its Federal Shutdown Loan Program, which aims to provide financial support to some federal employees affected by the ongoing government shutdown. Through the program, workers can receive a one-time, no-interest loan of $700 to help them cover expenses like rent and groceries. The loan must be repaid 45 days after the shutdown ends, giving workers time to receive their back pay from the federal government. The program is available to excepted federal employees, meaning they are required to work during a government shutdown but are not receiving a paycheck during that time.

Severn School looking for military retirees for Substitute Teacher positions
The Severn School is looking for substitute teachers in the Middle and Upper School at Severn School. The position is a great one for retirees who want to be involved in the community and are looking for something part-time. There is very little actual teaching involved, and no teaching experience required. The position is more about making sure the students are in class, working on whatever the teacher has assigned.
