Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History

1916 - The battleship Arizona (BB-39) was commissioned, beginning a fateful career that culminated with its sinking during the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec 7, 1941. Today Arizona rests on the bottom of the harbor as a memorial site, its hull the tomb for more than 1,000 sailors.

1922 - A Vought VE-7SF aircraft flown by Lieutenant Commander Virgil C. Griffin, Class of 1912, made the first takeoff from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, launching from Langley (CV-1) while it sat at anchor in the York River, Virginia.

1941 - SGT John Jacques '41, Royal Canadian Air Force was killed in action when the Vickers Wellington bomber he was aboard was shot down during a mission to Duisburg, Germany. He and his crew mates were members of the No. 40 Squadron RAF. (Only the pilot survived; he was later executed after participating in the “Great Escape” of March 1944.) After resigning from the Naval Academy in March 1940, his 2/c Spring, John's intention was to go to Tahiti and grow coconuts. When France fell in June of 1940, though, this became impossible, and he went to Canada instead. He joined the RCAF on July 12, 1940. He was survived by his parents, brother, and sister.

1979 - In response to news of a Soviet brigade conducting exercises in Cuba, the amphibious assault ship Nassau (LHA-4) landed 1,800 Marines at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Admiral overseeing Caribbean mission to retire after one year in role
The head of U.S. Southern Command, which is overseeing the Trump administration's ongoing military strikes on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean, will retire just over one year into his tenure. Adm. Alvin Holsey assumed command in November 2024. The commanders of combatant commands typically serve in the role for three years. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who announced Holsey's retirement Thursday on social media site X, did not specify when exactly Holsey will relinquish command of SOUTHCOM, saying it would be by the “year's end.” The command is currently one of the more active COCOMs, with eight Navy ships operating in the region, including the ships making up the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and three independent destroyers, according to the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker.

DOD decides against privatizing service members' household goods moves
The Department of Defense has reversed course and will not privatize military moves of household goods. Instead officials will improve the existing program under its current framework for at least three years. The move follows failures in a prior privatization effort that led to delays, lost items and companies declining to participate. Reform will focus on rate validation, better business rules and a modernized software system.

Camp Pendleton hosting live-fire event to celebrate Marine Corps anniversary
The U.S. Marine Corps will hold a live-fire demonstration at Camp Pendleton, located in San Diego County, California, to mark the 250th anniversary with 15,000 participants and integrated air, land and sea operations. Federal officials assured no local highways will close, but critics including California's governor are skeptical.
