Class of '75 'Gulf to Goat' ride raises awareness, $160K for charity
|
|
More than a dozen members of the Class of 1975 completed the final leg of the Gulf to Goat Charity bike ride in Annapolis on 22 October at the Naval Academy's Goat statue at gate one. The 1,200-mile ride began in Apalachicola, FL on 1 October at the Three Servicemen Statue South and included several members of the Class of 1973.
The ride concluded outside Lejeune Hall at the Naval Academy following a 47-mile ride from Crystal City, VA. This event showcased cross-class collaboration with a philanthropic purpose.
In addition to the camaraderie and strengthening of alumni bonds, the riders raised about $160,000 and awareness for The Emily Whitehead Foundation, The Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation, The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and The U.S. Naval Academy Association and Foundation.
CDR Dan Murphy '75, USN (Ret.), one of the event organizers, said riders were drenched midway through the three-week endeavor as a Nor'easter ripped through the Carolinas. He said riders leaned on their fellow alumni, further strengthening Academy bonds.
“It was a team effort without a doubt,” Murphy said. “Only about five of us knew each other before the trip. We had rough weather but it was a fantastic trip.”
The Classes of 1973 and 1983 set the standard in 2023 with a cross-country charity ride. Murphy challenges future classes to take the philanthropic plunge and leave their own legacy.
“The next class needs to do something similar to this,” Murphy said. “'73 helped us and we're willing to help anyone out.”

A Pakistani navy ship seized narcotics worth more than $972 million from sailboats in the Arabian Sea, U.S. Central Command confirmed on Tuesday. The Combined Maritime Forces, a naval partnership that includes the United States, said the Pakistani naval vessel PNS Yarmook last week intercepted two different traditional sailing vessels, known as dhows, within 48 hours. The crew seized several tons of crystal methamphetamine, worth over $960 million, and a smaller amount of cocaine, the partnership said in a statement.

Hegseth changes policy on how Pentagon officials speak with Congress
|
|
Leaders at the Pentagon have significantly altered how military officials will speak with Congress after a pair of new memos issued last week. In an 15 October memo, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and his deputy, Steve Feinberg, ordered Pentagon officials — including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — to obtain permission from the department's main legislative affairs office before they have any communication with Capitol Hill. The memo was issued the same day the vast majority of Pentagon reporters exited the building rather than agree to the Defense Department's new restrictions on their work, and it appears to be part of a broader effort by Hegseth to exert tighter control over what the department communicates to the outside world.
