1922 - The Navy League of the United States sponsors the first of what becomes an annual celebration of Navy Day in an effort to focus public attention on the importance of the sea service. This particular day is chosen because it is the birthday of former President Theodore Roosevelt, a champion of the Navy.
1950 - LCDR David Purdon, Jr. '40, USN was lost in a crash of an AJ-1 Savage immediately following takeoff from USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CV 42) near Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. (A video of the crash is available at the link above.) He was a member of Composite Squadron (VC) 5, based in Norfolk. Unable to determine his wartime experience, but for at least a year before the war he was aboard USS Richmond (CL 9). David was survived by his wife; he perished on their third wedding anniversary.
1969 - NR-1, the first deep submergence vessel using nuclear power, enters service. Capable of performing underwater search and recovery, oceanographic research missions, and installation and maintenance of underwater equipment, NR-1 becomes a key asset in the recovery of wreckage following the explosion of Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986.

Navy Mandates Use of Government Travel Card for PCS Travel
The Navy has issued updated guidance mandating the use of the Government Travel Charge Card (GTCC) for all permanent change-of-station (PCS) travel for eligible Sailors, effective immediately. The change, announced in NAVADMIN 210/25, aligns with Department of War policies. Under the new directive, active-duty Sailors, Training and Administration of the Reserves and certain Selected Reservists executing PCS orders must use GTCC to cover authorized travel expenses including lodging, meals and transportation. Exemptions to the new policy are outlined in the NAVADMIN. “By separating government travel costs from personal finances, the GTCC reduces financial burden on Sailors during relocation,” said Maria Perez, the GTCC program manager at MyNavy Career Center (MNCC).

Marine Corps Lays Out Aggressive Modernization Efforts in Force Design Update
The Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric M. Smith, published the 2025 Force Design Update, which lays out how the Marine Corps is aggressively pursuing modernization initiatives to ensure it remains a globally responsive, naval expeditionary force. These efforts are crucial for maintaining readiness and lethality in an era of rapidly evolving technology and increasingly capable adversaries. “Force Design is the Marine Corps' strategic priority, and this update makes clear both our progress and our direction,” said Gen. Smith. “We have strengthened formations, fielded new capabilities, and refined our concepts, but modernization remains a continuous campaign of learning and adaptation.”

Naval Academy Pride on Display at the 50th Marine Corps Marathon
Sunday, 26 October marked the 50th running of the Marine Corps Marathon. Every year since 2007, the last official finisher has been awarded the Penguin Award in honor of Major Megan McClung, USMC, Naval Academy Class of 1995.
Megan conceived the award when she organized the Marine Corps Marathon Forward held on a U.S. base in Iraq's Anbar Province. She was inspired to award a penguin by running columnist John Bingham, who celebrated runners of all levels and had the nickname of Penguin.
Megan's brother, Michael McClung, presented the award. He was joined by Run to Honor board members Alexa Hunter '04 and Josh Angichiodo '06, Bill Conner '95 and USNA Alumni Association and Foundation CEO Jeff Webb '95, who ran his 19th consecutive Marine Corps Marathon in honor of the over 2,700 alumni who have been lost in combat or training operations.
The Marine Corps Marathon, known as The People's Marathon, is an annual race held in Arlington and Washington D.C. celebrating endurance, service and community. Organized by the U.S. Marines, it is one of the largest marathons in the world and does not offer prize money, honoring the spirit of every runner who takes part.

Making the unseen visible
Around the world, U.S. competitors in the maritime domain are “going dark”. By controlling their emissions these ships at sea become “dark vessels” and vanish in plain sight from being tracked. The unfortunate reality is that traditional monitoring systems aren't enough. The maritime domain is massive and complex, and relying on one source for truth is not enough. You need the whole picture. That's where Planet comes in. Planet captures over 21.7 million square kilometers of the ocean every single day with our constellation of hundreds of Earth imaging satellites which you can use to help track the untrackable. Planet graciously sponsored this year's Anchors Aweigh Open golf tournament during Homecoming.
