Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History
1865 - The Confederate raider Shenandoah arrives at Liverpool, England. Upon being informed by the British Foreign Ministry that the Civil War has ended, skipper Lieutenant James I. Waddell lowers the last official Confederate flag.
1950 - 2LT Robert Reem '48, USMC was killed in action when he threw himself on a grenade to save the lives of his men near Chinhung-ni, North Korea. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. In August 1943 he enlisted in the Marine Corps, but by October was at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and entered the Naval Academy in June 1944. After the completion of The Basic School, he remained at Camp Lejeune at the Special Training Regiment until he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines in December 1949. The battalion was ordered to Korea in August 1950, where it was assigned to the 7th Marne Regiment. Robert and the rest of the battalion fought at the Inchon landing, the capture of Seoul, and fighting in North Korea. “His superb courage, cool decisiveness, and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of certain death reflect the highest credit upon Second Lieutenant Reem and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.” Robert was survived by his wife, parents, three sisters, and two brothers. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
1951 - While conducting weather reconnaissance over the Sea of Japan, a P2V Neptune of VP-6 is attacked by Soviet fighter planes and shot down. All 10 crewmembers are reported as missing and presumed dead.

Mikie Sherrill says New Jersey voters want 'leadership'
New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill secured a decisive victory in Tuesday's election to become the next governor of the Garden State in a race some polls predicted would be tighter. Sherrill beat the Republican candidate, Jack Ciatterelli, by about 13% of the vote — marking the first time since the 1960s that New Jersey voters elected a governor from the same party three terms in a row. In an interview with Morning Edition, Sherill said her win was about New Jersey residents wanting leadership at a time when many feel some of President Trump's moves — including tariffs, federal reductions in health spending and threats to the multi-billion dollar Gateway Tunnel Project — will make life harder for them. "They look to my background in the military. They also want somebody who gets it and gets them," Sherrill said. "They look to the fact that I'm a mom of four kids and I know what's been going on in our communities and our schools, and they wanted somebody to address those key issues." Speaking to NPR's A Martínez, Sherrill discussed her win and what Democrats' successful 2025 election means going forward.

2 Killed in Eastern Pacific Strike on Suspected Narco Boat
The U.S. conducted its 14th strike on a vessel allegedly carrying illicit narcotics, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday via social media platform X. The strike, which was on a boat in the Eastern Pacific, killed the two people aboard. The fatal strike brings the total number of deaths in U.S. strikes on suspected drug traffickers to 67. This is the second such strike in November and the 14th since President Donald Trump announced the first one in September. There have been two survivors in the 14 strikes. Two survivors from an 16 Oct. strike were repatriated to their countries. The Mexican Navy conducted search and rescue operations to find a survivor from an 25 Oct. strike, but the search was suspended Saturday after the navy combed the Pacific for 96 hours, USNI News previously reported.

China Dismisses U.S. Claims Of Electronic Warfare In Navy Jet, Chopper Crashes
China's defense ministry rejected U.S. accusations that it used electronic warfare to cause two recent Navy aircraft crashes near the USS Nimitz in the South China Sea. Beijing dismissed the claims as “groundless conspiracy theories” and accused Washington of spreading misinformation to justify its military presence and maintain regional dominance amid growing tensions between the two powers in contested waters.
