1861 - Naval forces under the command of Flag Officer Samuel DuPont steam into Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, pouring withering fire into Forts Beauregard and Walker and forcing the Confederates to abandon the positions. With only minor resistance from a Confederate squadron, the Union ships put ashore landing parties that occupy the forts until relieved by Army troops under General William T. Sherman. The capture of Port Royal yields 43 Confederate cannon, and the victorious Du Pont writes, “It is not my temper to rejoice over fallen foes, but this must be a gloomy night in Charleston.”

1861 - The gunboats Lexington and Tyler support troops under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant during the Battle of Belmont in Missouri by engaging Confederate batteries along the Mississippi River and covering Grant's withdrawal upon the arrival of Confederate reinforcements.

1944 - LCDR Hugh Rimmer '37, USN, LT Theodore Walker '41, USN, and LT Francis Riley '42, USN were killed in action when USS Albacore (SS 218) was sunk by a mine on November 7, 1944 while on patrol north of Hokkaido. Hugh had become the boat's commanding officer only weeks before; Theodore was the executive officer. Both of those men were posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Hugh was survived by his wife and parents; Theodore was survived by his mother; Francis by his wife, parents, and sister.

2009 - USS New York (LPD-21) is commissioned. The ship's bow is created from seven and a half tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks. New York is one of three Navy vessels commissioned to honor the victims of the attacks. The ship's crest includes an image of the Twin Towers with a phoenix rising from flames and the motto “Never Forget,” symbolizing the nation's resiliency, strength, and determination to rebuild following the attack.

This Veterans Day, audiences are invited to honor the extraordinary service and sacrifice of African Americans in the U.S. Armed Forces with the acclaimed documentary Black Uniform, now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Winner of multiple film festival Best Documentary awards, Black Uniform shares the powerful stories of twelve Black men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States military—from World War II to the present day. Through their voices, the film reveals both the pride of service and the struggle for equality that have defined generations of Black veterans.

The documentary features a remarkable group of trailblazers, including:
  • Tuskegee Airman, Dr. Eugene Richardson, one of the legendary Black pilots who shattered barriers during World War II.
  • Romay Davis, a member of the historic 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during WWII.
  • Congressman Charles Rangel, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient who served in the Korean War before dedicating his life to public service.
  • Janina Simmons, the first Black woman to graduate from the U.S. Army Ranger School, representing a new generation of leadership and resilience.
