Today in Navy, Marine Corps
and USNA Memorial Hall History
1988 - While operating in the Persian Gulf, the frigate Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) strikes a mine. The ensuing explosion blows a 21-foot hole in its bottom, injures ten of its crew, and causes extensive flooding. Also in 1988, Lt. Brian Hawley ’84, USN was lost when the A-6E Intruder he was aboard crashed about 25 miles south of Chehalis, in southwestern Washington. The pilot was also lost; they were members of Attack Squadron (VA) 145, based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. Brian was a native of South Lake Tahoe, California, where he was active in outdoor activities, including skiing and rock climbing. The Alumni Association has lost contact with the family. If you know how to contact them please email [email protected].

2018 - Following the use of chemical weapons by the Bashar al-Assad regime against civilians in Syria, President Donald J. Trump orders the military to strike the Syrian government. To achieve the president’s goals, the Navy launched 57 Tomahawk missiles from the USS Monterey (CG-61), USS Higgins (DDG-76), and USS John Warner (SSN-785).

5 killed in U.S. strikes on suspected Nnarco boats in Eastern Pacific
Forces with Joint Task Force Southern Spear struck two vessels in the Eastern Pacific on Saturday, the first such strikes in April. Two men were killed in the first strike while the second strike killed three men. One person survived the first strike, according to a late Sunday U.S. Southern Command release. SOUTHCOM notified the U.S. Coast Guard, which then began search and rescue efforts. The Coast Guard has not provided an update on the survivor.

Carrier USS George H.W. Bush operating off Southern Africa as Iranian blockade begins
The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN‑77) is operating off the coast of southern Africa as it transits around the continent toward the Arabian Sea, where it is expected to join a growing U.S. naval presence amid a newly announced blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Instead of entering the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar, the carrier and its strike group are sailing around Africa to avoid the Red Sea and Bab el‑Mandeb, areas affected by recent Houthi attacks. The movement coincides with U.S. Central Command’s implementation of a blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic while allowing limited humanitarian shipments.
