TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS 
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY
 
1944 - CDR John Moore '32, USN was killed in action when USS Grayback (SS 208) was sunk by Japanese aircraft south of Okinawa. He was thrice awarded the Navy Cross, and a frigate (FFG 19) was named for him. He was survived by his wife, daughter, mother, and three siblings.

Sing Second Interview with Suni Williams '87 at the ISS
We wanted to feature exclusive interviews with all four of our Distinguished Graduate selectees for 2025. Getting an interview with Suni Williams proved difficult, but we made it happen. How many of you can say you interviewed someone in space? It was definitely a special moment for Chris and John to have a 20-minute live interview with Suni from the ISS. Suni talks about the honor of DGA, the great class of 1987 and lessons she's learned in leadership.

DEPSECDEF nom talks Pentagon budget shifts, workforce reduction
The new effort to adjust Pentagon spending is not a cut, but a reallocation to find $50 billion for the Department of Defense's priorities under the new Trump administration, the nominee for the department's second-highest job told a Senate panel. Testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Stephen Feinberg said the targets could include “legacy systems that are not essential to the mission.” Feinberg, a co-founder of the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, added that in the $850 billion Pentagon budget there is “so much there that we can get at without getting to bone.”

 

NAS Oceana personnel keep master jet base mission-ready during record snowfall
As winter weather blanketed the region, mission-essential personnel at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana worked around the clock to ensure the installation remained safe and operational. “Our top priorities are ensuring the base remains mission-ready and keeping our personnel safe,” said NAS Oceana's Commanding Officer Capt. Josh Appezzato. “Thanks to the dedication of our security forces, public works teams, air operations personnel and culinary specialists, we're able to continue operations despite the wintry conditions.”  The snowstorm produced nearly a foot of snow, breaking records for yearly snowfall in Virginia Beach since 1980, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. While much of the region came to a standstill during the record-breaking snowfall.

Air Force Academy returns to normal operations following threat investigation
The Air Force Academy says it has returned to operations following a threat investigation. The academy said it responded to an anonymous threat to an academic building on Tuesday morning. The building and the surrounding area were evacuated. Working dog support from Peterson Space Force Base and the Colorado Springs Police Department, 10th Security Forces Squadron defenders assisted the academy in a search of the building in question. It would not elaborate on the nature of that threat or exactly how the academy received the threat.
