RI shipyard won a $78M contract. Why growth isn't easy yet. (Williams '87)
At Senesco Marine in North Kingstown, company president Ted Williams understands the importance of a strong shipbuilding industry in the United States, and the U.S. Navy veteran is working to support that mission.
The United States has fallen behind other countries, particularly China, in its shipbuilding, with poor implications for the country's defense and trade, Williams says, and the Trump administration recognizes that. To address it, he says, the administration's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law in July 2025, includes funding for naval and defense shipbuilding, as well as capital improvements to shipyards.
Senesco was founded in 1999 by a group of entrepreneurs who wanted to create jobs in Rhode Island. It was sold in 2006 to Reinauer Transportation Companies, which is based in Staten Island, New York, and also operates in East Boston.
