TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS
AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY

1915 - LTjg Alfred Ede '09, USN was lost when USS F-4 (SS 23) sank during a test dive off of Honolulu. He was the commissioning commanding officer; all 21 officers and crew aboard were lost. F-4 was the first commissioned submarine of the US Navy to be lost at sea.

1945 - After 35 days of bitter fighting, the amphibious assault on the rocky fortress of Iwo Jima finally appeared over. On the night of 25 March, however, a 300-man Japanese force launched a vicious final counterattack in the vicinity of Airfield Number 2. Army pilots, Seabees and Marines of the 5th Pioneer Battalion and 28th Marines fought the fanatical Japanese force till morning but suffered heavy casualties - more than 100 Americans killed and another 200 wounded. Nearly all of the Japanese force was killed in the battle.

Sing Second Podcast with the Sisterhood of Mother B and Lax Alum Nolan Hickey '13
Welcome to another great episode of the Sing Second podcast. We bring you the stories and happenings at the Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (AA&F). We celebrated the USNA Women Annual Gathering at the Fluegel Alumni Center this past Saturday. What a great day of togetherness and community. We do a little Pod Cooperative Crossover with the hosts of the Sisterhood of Mother B Podcast - Jeannette Gaudry Haynie '98, Shannon Martin McClain '98 and Kate Glynn '98. We chat about how the Shared Interest Group continues to support alumnae and the Brigade…and we chat about what they are accomplishing with their amazing podcast. We also interview former Navy Lax Goalie - Nolan Hickey '13. Nolan talks about his life with Coach Richie Meade, his time in the Marine Corps and plugs the amazing Lacrosse Alumni Tailgate with the Letterwinner's Association for the Army game April 12.  That and more on the best Alumni Association and Foundation podcast there is. Give a listen. Beat Army ... always.

GOVERNMENT & MILITARY NEWS

A new museum in Texas tells the life stories of Medal of Honor recipients
A new museum devoted to telling the stories of those who have received the nation's highest military honor is opening this coming week in Texas. The National Medal of Honor Museum is set to open Tuesday in Arlington, just west of Dallas. It highlights the lives and service of Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War to the global war on terrorism. Over 3,500 people have received the Medal of Honor, which is awarded by Congress for risking one's life in combat beyond the call of duty. Chris Cassidy '93, the museum's president and CEO, said he hopes the exhibits inspire visitors. “Everybody needs courage in some form or fashion,” he said. “So that's our aim: to inspire people through the stories of Medal of Honor actions, to bring a little courage into your own life.” **AA&F Shipmate Magazine Editor Jimmy DeButts is in Arlington covering the museum grand opening. Expect a full interview with Chris Cassidy and further coverage in the May/Jun Shipmate Magazine.

Senate confirms John Phelan as Secretary of the Navy
The Senate confirmed John Phelan to lead the Department of the Navy in a 62-30 vote on Monday. Phelan will now lead the Navy and the Marine Corps during a time of transition. The Navy continues to deploy forces to the Middle East and, at the same time, prepares for a potential conflict in the Pacific. In the U.S., the Department of the Navy is managing delayed shipbuilding programs, a substantial backlog of repair work and ongoing quality-of-life issues inside the Navy and Marine Corps.
