Monday, April 28, 2025TODAY IN NAVY, MARINE CORPS AND USNA MEMORIAL HALL HISTORY 1917 - LT Clarence Thomas '08, USN was killed in action when the merchant steamship SS Vacuum was torpedoed by a German submarine. He was the officer in charge of the vessel's naval guard. Clarence was the first naval officer killed in WWI. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. He was survived by his wife, Evely
